Have you ever received critique or feedback that hurt in the moment but made your writing 1000x better?

@erinleeauthor @SDDonovan Honestly, realizing that is a huge step as a writer. It's amazing how much stronger a story becomes when the characters feel fully lived-in. Do you still use character dossiers for every manuscript now?

@SusanSavageLee1 This is why I don't like fantasy. According to my writer's group, it's supposed to contain a million of those tiny details.

@StevenTBoers63 I love tropes and typical stuff but I would love it if I encountered something like this as well.

Writing thought: I want to someday make a story that intentionally goes against typical story structures. I don't know what it would be yet, but I think it'd be a fun challenge.

@SDDonovan I let it sit by my bed and guilt me for years. I really need to let go.

It's okay to DNF a book if it doesn't connect with you.

@Tim_Denning And I'm always on autopilot during those early hours and the work almost gets done in a blur. Those hours are special.

There’s something special about 6am-9am. Most people are either sleeping or engaging in some unnecessary morning routine. These 3 hours are sacred. They can be used to build a side project. And that’s the very thing that can free you from a life you’re not satisfied with.

@AlanBreenAuthor I'm amazing at how much I've learned about writing simply by being on social media. I can't believe the things I did even last year that are so blatantly wrong to me now.

Last year I started writing with no experience whatsoever. A year later, I still don't know everything – but that's the joy of it ☺️ #WritingCommunity

@autumn_inkblood I would like that. I was just thinking how much I'd like to attend a Grub Street class in Boston.

It's strange to me how few discussions there are over writing craft on X. Most of the time it's people complaining about the "show, don't tell" rule. Where are my fellow writers who want to nerd out over plot structure and pacing?

@scriblotta I don't blame them. There is some serious nutjobbery on social media.

I contacted my fave babysitter as a kid to tell her I’d written a novel & one of the characters was inspired by her kindness. She was suspicious & stopped responding before I had a chance. She didn't even remember me. I get being on guard, you have to be online. Just a bummer.

@MateenSales @SDDonovan Well, I'll never not thoroughly know my characters now! Also, I had TONS of characters in my first novel and it was a first novel. What was I thinking?!

@erinleeauthor @SDDonovan This is exactly why honest beta readers are priceless. It's amazing how much stronger a story becomes once the characters are fully understood. Was that the biggest lesson you took from the project?

@jaiyagill There could be something here. SLIGHTLY shorter than average to drive that power to prove themselves.

@erinleeauthor @SDDonovan That is such a lightbulb moment! Character dossiers really do bridge that gap between "amateur" and "excellent." As a beta reader, I’d love to help you work through that first half if you're looking for more feedback!

If you're a writer who needs a car, but you also need to save money so you can write more, get a two-door Honda Civic. They are cheap, cute as hell, and last forever. I had my Civic for 11 years and put over 200,000 mi on it.
