@ARedPOV Nisbet signing for Aberdeen is objectively a better signing than Shankland for Hearts no matter how you look at it

A court in Israel says the two volunteers abducted in international waters from a Gaza-bound aid flotilla will not be released. The lawyer for Brazilian national Thiago Avila and Spanish Saif Abu Keshek says they have been abused in custody. Brazil and Spain say their abduction and detention are illegal.

Israeli soldiers beat and tortured flotilla organisers Saif Abukeshek and Thiago Ávila after abducting them in international waters near Greece in the early hours of Thursday morning, lawyers and diplomats have said. After illegally intercepting 22 boats and kidnapping around 200 activists hundreds of miles from Gaza, Israel transferred the majority to Greek authorities, but refused to release Abukeshek and Ávila. Instead, it transported them back to an Israeli desert prison, where Palestinians are routinely tortured. Brazilian activist Ávila was dragged face-down across the floor and beaten so badly he passed out twice, lawyers said, after visiting him on Saturday. His wife, Lara Souza, said an embassy official told her he had been temporarily blinded by his injuries, with his left eye still swollen shut, but he was being denied medical treatment. In a brief visit, where he was separated from the consul by a glass screen and not able to speak freely, he reported pain all over his body, especially in his hand and shoulder, and said that soldiers had threatened to throw him overboard and target his wife and two-year-old daughter. Abukeshek, who had been sailing on an observer boat and did not intend to go to Gaza, was “in shock”, his wife Sally Issa said. He was forced to lie face-down on the floor of an Israeli warship for two days, lawyers said, blindfolded and with his hands bound behind his back. Spain has demanded Israel release Abukeshek, who is Palestinian but holds Spanish and Swedish citizenship. On Friday, prime minister Pedro Sánchez said he had been "illegally abducted by the Netanyahu government". On Sunday, the activists appeared before an Israeli court, where a judge extended their detention by two days. Lawyers demanded their immediate and unconditional release, telling the court the entire process was "fundamentally flawed and illegal", and describing Israel's actions as a "retaliatory measure against humanitarian activist leaders". The two men have now been transferred back to solitary confinement in Shikma prison, where they are being held in windowless cells. Both are on hunger strike, with Ávila saying he will not leave without Abukeshek.

On the evening of October 29, 1956, the IDF executed nineteen men, six women, and twenty-three children who were returning from their work in the nearby fields for violating a curfew they were never notified of. The IDF then forced other villagers to dig graves for their relatives under the cover of night, and placed a seven week gag order on any press who might have reported on it. The southern Triangle villages had been under a 10 pm daily curfew until the morning of the 29th, when Colonel Yisskhar Shadmi requested a last-minute change to a 5 pm curfew. When giving the instructions for this change, he instructed border patrol commanders to “shoot to kill” anyone found outside after 5 pm. The new curfew was only communicated to Kafr Qasim’s mukhtar at 4:30 pm. Thirty minutes proved not enough time to notify all of the village’s workers, who were yet in the groves, fields, and quarries beyond the village. It was not long before the shooting began. As the villagers returned home after their day’s work, they were met by the border police stationed on the road. A survivor from the first encounter, Abd Allah Samir Bdeir, reports that the guards ordered the workers to stand on the road before giving the execution order. The guards reportedly then checked over the wounded men, women, and children to ensure all were dead. By 7 pm, the border police had killed nineteen men, six women, and twenty-three children. Later that night, the army forced several residents of a nearby village to begin digging. They would not know until later that they were digging the graves of their neighbors. It was called the Kafr Qasim massacre

The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) was attacked last night by warships, drones and speedboats full of heavily-armed Israeli commandos, despite sailing just off the coast of Greece, more than 500 nautical miles from Gaza. Of 57 boats at sea, 22 are believed to have been intercepted in the attack, which began at around 11 pm local time. 35 others escaped interception, with many sailing into Greek territorial waters. Around 170 participants are believed to have been detained, and are likely being taken to Israel – several days sail away. Others were left stranded at sea. In a statement, GSF described their situation as “a calculated death trap”. “After smashing engines and destroying navigation arrays, the military retreated – intentionally leaving hundreds of civilians stranded on powerless, broken vessels directly in the path of a massive approaching storm.” Organisers initially assumed that all intercepted participants had been detained. Many activists posted pre-recorded videos to their Instagram accounts saying they had been taken hostage. But with systems down and phones thrown overboard, it is possible some are actually adrift and unable to communicate. In October, the IDF pirated flotilla boats and sailed them back to Ashdod – but Israeli commandos reportedly found this challenging because they got seasick and didn’t know how to sail. The journey then was only hours long; this time it could last several days. While Israel has illegally intercepted dozens of past flotillas in international waters, the distance from Gaza and proximity to Europe this time is unprecedented, with many asking how European governments could allow it to happen. UN special rapporteur Francesca Albanese said on Instagram that the attack should send “shock waves across Europe”. “Alarm! How on earth is [it] possible that Israel is allowed to assault and seize vessels in international waters just off Greece?”

In Hebron, if you are Jewish, you can throw rocks at Palestinians for fun all you like. In Hebron, if you are Palestinian & you throw rocks at Jews, you’ll be executed on the spot or disappeared into the most well-documented rape dungeon on earth. Not so complicated after all. It’s called apartheid.
