The United States wants to meet with Greenland 🇬🇱 – without Denmark 🇩🇰 The United States has attempted to arrange a high-level political meeting with representatives from Greenland without involving Denmark. According to the Danish newspaper Politiken, which has spoken to sources in the United States, Greenland, and Denmark, the U.S. has on several occasions sought to establish direct dialogue with Jens-Frederik Nielsen after he became Greenland’s new premier in April. The established practice is that both Denmark and Greenland must be present when foreign, security, and defence policy matters affecting Greenland are discussed. Despite this, the U.S. has repeatedly attempted to bypass Denmark — even though foreign, defence, and security policy remain the responsibility of the central government of Denmark. According to Section 19 of the Danish Constitution, the Government of Denmark retains full responsibility for the foreign policy of the Kingdom of Denmark, including matters concerning Greenland.
