@JRUrbaneNetwork Retrofitting platform screen doors to existing systems used to be rare and technically challenging… Today, however, it’s a well-established and fully mastered process that is being implemented extensively across Europe and Asia (and now even in South America).

@JRUrbaneNetwork In Marseille as well: They cut sections of the platform to install steel bars, then pour concrete to reinforce it. Metal plates conceal the base for the future PSD supports until they’re installed. Tiles will be laid on top once the work is complete. It all happens overnight!

@francis_evans @thomasforth Line 4’s link to fire is symbolic: it forms a circle around the city centre and is themed around the sun and the Sun King. Montpellier’s history is closely tied to Louis XIV, and the line serves several monuments from his reign, such as the Citadel and the Peyrou Arc de Triomphe.

@Aden_Yacobi Indeed, each of Montpellier’s tram lines has an associated element! Line 1 (air 🌬️) goes to the high-speed rail station, Line 3 (water 💦) goes to the sea, Line 2 is themed around earth🌸 and Line 4 around fire🔥, and Line 5 is themed around nature🌿, as it serves numerous parks.

Montpellier now has 81.6 km of modern tram lines — about 1 km per ~5,900 residents — and over 100 million passengers per year.

@casa_rei Yeah, as you said, it’s not rocket science (a domain where China excels), but cable transport. If China can do it better, faster, and cheaper, why do they hire European companies to build their cable lifts? Why do these companies still hold 99% of the global market share? 🤡

@euro_projects It is not rocket's science man, China do it better, faster, a lot more and almost free on a lot of places, in Paris you have to sell a kidney to make a trip.

@casa_rei European companies Poma–Leitner and Doppelmayr–Garaventa invented cable transport and hold over 99% of the market share. Europe has by far the most cable lifts (thousands of them), and nearly all of China’s cable lifts were built by these companies.

@nuabio Lyon T1 runs through narrow streets with sharp curves, full of pedestrians and cyclists, in dense areas of the city centre. Toronto’s Finch West LRT is a straight line and runs in the middle of a suburban stroad. Yet it operates at 11 km/h — so Lyon is still faster!

@BucktonMel91596 That’s why “urban” is important. Paris Cable C1 is far from being the longest gondola lift—not just in Europe, but even in France (there are much longer ones in the Alps). The longest of any kind in Europe is in Serbia and is 9 km long.

@Ian_Brooker @Ogilvie_CJ Same manufacturer, but the similarities end here. The London cable car is mainly a tourist attraction, while this one is truly intended for commuters and is therefore much longer, has more stations, and is fully integrated into the fare system.

As a world-class city, everything is satisfyingly orchestrated—Metro Line 18’s east extension will eventually connect at one of its stations, tying it all together!

@JRUrbaneNetwork I mean, if they’re talking about the one in the picture (Strasbourg Line D, crossing the bridge between France and Germany), then they’re right: the Strasbourg tram has higher ridership than the Los Angeles Metro Rail. But if they’re talking about North American LRTs, then… 💀

Toronto runner Mac Bauer (instagram.com/514runner) raced the Finch West LRT on foot yesterday - beat it by 18mins - 39mins of running time, 46mins w/ stops for lights. The LRT & passenger took 1 hour 4mins total. LRT was also 27mins slower than driving which took 37mins

@JakeLandauTO Actually, Spain and France are the cheapest places in the world to build high-speed rail, and China has by far the largest domestic network. But when it comes to exporting HSR expertise, it’s a tie—all three have been involved in many projects and must be considered.
