Elisa Solinas and I discuss our research in HBR showing that employees who create boundaries around work still face scrutiny from employers despite being perceived as more productive – and offer recommendations for how to change that. hbr.org/2025/05/resear…

@fedorenkoin @CassSunstein Thanks for the example! Some opaque products are actually quite utilitarian (e.g., produce and meal subscriptions) and in our studies participants also preferred mystery face masks and rental cars. So we think it can work even for utilitarian products...

@CassSunstein @evabuechel Add LOL Surprise Dolls to the list to realize all "secret" or "mysterious" opaque products belong to indulgent consumption categories: entertainment, travel, fashion, etc. Not sure if it can work for more utilitarian products

Very excited that our work on understanding when consumers prefer mystery options despite their uncertainty is out in @JCRNEWS. Thanks to my coauthor @Ruoou for this awesome thread summarizing it.

What a surprise! @evabuechel and I are super excited to share that our paper “Mysterious Consumption: Preference for Horizontal (vs. Vertical) Uncertainty and the Role of Surprise” is the Editor’s Choice article in the current issue of @JCRNEWS! 1/8 academic.oup.com/jcr/article/49…

@andre_quentin Also: the ‘standards‘ are high partly because of a history of cutting corners …

Another thought: When the hurdles to publication are unreasonably high, the journals are subsidizing researchers who do not jump them and instead "go around" them. Absurd standards do not reward better science: They reward cutting corners.

I am concerned about the $ to publish a CB paper now. Assuming a paper gets into the first journal one submits to, you can still be looking at 15-20 studies and 3000-4000 subjects. That’s $10-20K. If it’s rejected, the expense increases. Will our field shrink? @JCRNEWS @AMA_JMR
