@FestAKINBUSOYE @TfL The frustration is understandable: fares rise, people pay properly, and then watch others crash through barriers with apparent impunity. A transport system cannot rely on public trust if visible enforcement feels optional.

At 16:30 today, a guy jumped through the ticket barrier at St. John's Wood tube station right in front of me. I shouted to call the attention of the @TfL staff sat in his box thing. The staff member just told me he can't do anything. Silly me had to pay to get through the barriers. So I walked down the escalators (which has finally been fixed after six months), caught up with the fare dodger to ask him why he didn't pay. The guy said "I can't afford to. Cost of living and that!". I told him I have to pay for him not paying and I am affected by the cost of living too. He had the cheek to then say "Well that's up to you man. We are all struggling and walked off" Yes we are all struggling, but what exactly is the point of TfL staff when someone blatantly crashes through ticket barriers and they literally do nothing.

The UK government calls £50,271 a “high earner” in London for tax purposes. The UK housing market calls £50k “not enough for a mortgage deposit in London.” Make it make sense.

@iSlimfit True, but council tax is not really a pay-per-use fee. It is part of how councils fund shared local services people may not use directly every day, from adult social care to waste, roads and safeguarding. The real issue may be system design, not the principle itself.

Council tax is the boldest bill in the UK. You pay it whether you use the services or not, it goes up every April without asking, and if you miss it they escalate faster than any other creditor.
