Eight of my Australian bank’s C-suite play female touch football together. It’s great team building and nurturing of a competitive spirit.
The problem is injuries are unavoidable, even with non-contact sport.
In six months they had 3 broken fingers, a sprained ankle, and an ACL tear. They missed 20 days of work collectively.
I can’t even imagine the emotional turmoil they went through.
When our COO broke her finger I took it upon myself to assist. I took her to hospital appointments, wrote her in-meeting notes, and prepared her 3 meals a day. I did my part.
It was during a hospital follow-up appointment that I did something out of line.
We were reviewing her x-ray, it was bad, a severe fracture of the phalanges. Dr Priya was telling us about the recovery time.
During a quiet moment I turned to our COO, “You know maybe it’s not a great idea for you girls to be playing these sports all the time. This is the fourth injury this year alone. We need you at the bank.”
That was last year. This year our bank achieved Gold Tier status at the Australian LGBTQ+ Inclusion Awards.
Don’t be afraid to get out of line when it matters.
