@DrJosefWD 'Medications stack on'. This is accurate. Before long a chemistry set of psychoactive substances on repeat prescription long after discharge from secondary services. It's really troubling.

I'm a psychiatrist. Most of what I'll say next was never taught to me in training. If you've been on antidepressants over a year and feel more tired, foggy, anxious, and unmotivated than you used to, you may not be "treatment resistant." You may be having problems with the medication itself. The FDA's own chief scientific and medical officer pointed this out last year. Clinical trials average 8 weeks. Real world use averages 5 years. Past one year, no one really knows. Tolerance is real. Doses creep up. Medications stack on. People feel worse, not better. You deserve honest informed consent. Not another add on.

@fworksconfetti @angel_0f_deathx I wonder how many people presenting to mental health services with acute symptoms of distress are there because of psychiatry hubris in prescribing harmful and mind altering substances with complex long-lasting impacts?

@JDaviesPhD @ReadReadj There's an enormous role for deprescribers if consensus builds that psychotropic medications are hugely overprescribed, which they are of course. Psychiatry is the dominant ideology. It occupies the castle on the hill and is fabulously defended.

In England last year nearly 20% of the adult population were prescribed antidepressants, compared to only 3% psychotherapy.... The imbalance isn't our brains it's in our provision.... - We have a serious problem on this side of the Atlantic that needs addressing too...

Creating customers for life that is sadly what has become of my profession of psychiatry. We have become better at creating long term mental health problems than helping people get on with their lives
Dr. Roger McFillin@DrMcFillin

On episode #213 of Hart2Heart with @drmikehart, we discuss how psychiatry has medicalized normal human emotions, reducing suffering to chemical imbalances and creating lifelong patients instead of empowering people to heal. Emotions are powerful energy meant to be moved into creation and transformation, not suppressed with pharmaceuticals. #MentalHealth #RadicallyGenuine #PsychiatryReform #TraumaRecovery #PostTraumaticGrowth #MindBodyConnection #ConsciousLiving

@jefffinethomas I'm aware of the biases previous readings of psych texts and opinions of colleagues sits with me. As much as I know them I consider Nancy McWillaims categories, and think broadly about object relational and attachment theory.

I'm working on a project about personality and could use your help. When you want to better understand your patients' personality, which resource comes to mind first?

@Chitailova How I wish the UK had something like this rather than falling services with just psych drugs to offer for circumstances of living conditions.

Today I saw my psychiatrist and he told me that now in the Netherlands they have created a place similar to Soteria, where you can go when in crisis just for rest, without anyone imposing any meds or labels. Started in Friesland it can also be found in other places in the Netherlands like in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. In the field of psychiatry they do something right here in Friesland. A kind empathetic approach where they even have a condition called ‘depression due to life circumstances.’
