i actually think "surface-level" friendships are very healthy. not everyone in your life has to be your ride-or-die. some friends are for the gym. some friends are for church. some are just for complaining about work or bureaucracy. when you stop expecting everyone to be your everything, the disappointment disappears. the deep conversations are for the 2-3 people closest to you.

my therapist told me I was functionally depressed. all I did was work at Facebook 9 hours a day. she said you need dedicated time of play. every Sunday, same coffee shop, I played chess all day. for 8 months. this was my oasis an obsession. very quickly, people started showing up. we called it chess club. not only did my internal world improve, but I made so many wonderful friends in a new city. met 3 chess grand masters. visited international chess clubs. spent months hand building a chess set from ceramics and woodworking. it was a small spark that lit me back to life. I’m glad I listed to her.
