Lebanese PM Nawaf Salam: -Lebanon is not seeking normalization with Israel, but peace -The goal of negotiations is a complete Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon -We require domestic discussions to apply the State's sovereignty over all its territory and to monopolize arms -This is not the first time Lebanon has held direct negotiations with Israel -Consolidating the ceasefire will be the basis for any new round of negotiations with Israel in Washington -Lebanon's negotiation track with Israel is not entirely separated from the Islamabad track -Lebanon has succeeded in establishing the idea that it is negotiating on its own behalf -Communication with Hezbollah is conducted through the party's government ministers

For critics of the government in Damascus, what would you prefer to see? I’ve not heard the critics explain what kind of government would be acceptable to them. Do some of you just wish the Assad regime was still in power? If you believe in democracy what would you like to see? If your stance is you want a federal Syria so minority regions enjoy some form of self governance, do you think those regions should be democratic or a series of one party statelets?

Australian Governor General announced today that she is hosting Sheikh Dr. Mohammad bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa at Admiralty House - the Secretary General of the Muslim World League. Al-Issa's highlights reel: 1. Calling Jewish hearts harsh as stone, "even harsher" (Quran Radio, "The Obstinacy of the Jews & the Harshness of Their Hearts," 16 August 2014, minute 6:25). 2. Claiming Jews "distorted the Torah" intentionally and wickedly (same sermon, minute 9:10), insisting that they didn't merely twist meaning but altered the actual text - described in his words as "marrying the two uglinesses." 3. Claiming today's Jews remain on the same "deviant path" as their ancestors (same sermon, minute 11:00). 4. Saying Jews are "ashamed" to repeat how Jews describe God because, in his telling, Jewish theology is the most ignorant and ugly conception imaginable (same sermon, minute 16:20). 5. Attacking core Christian theology as fabrication - saying Christians "spoke lies and fabrications" about God having a son (same sermon, minute 17:50). 6. Calling on Jews to "fold into" Muslim society ("God's Call for Jews to Join the Muslim Community," Quran Radio, 19 February 2014, minute 5:40). 7. Saying Jews conceal religious truth out of "ill will, and envy" rather than ignorance - claiming they actually know Islam is true and reject it deliberately ("The Call of God to the Jews to Believe in the Quran," 19 February 2014, minute 9:00).

First: Sources of the Poisons and Targeting the Mountain: The sources of drug manufacturing in all their varieties have become known far and wide, concentrated in areas under the control of the Damascus regime and neighboring countries under the control of cross-border militias, with direct oversight from their allies. The attempt to portray As-Suwayda as a source of these substances represents a falsification of reality, as the mountain is under a suffocating siege and lacks the environment, resources, or necessary tools to establish labs of this kind. Our internal security apparatus has succeeded in arresting a number of dealers and users, and it has been proven with conclusive evidence that the source of the narcotic substances is regime-controlled areas, as part of an attempt to flood the mountain with poisons as a form of political revenge following the failure of brutal military campaigns to subjugate the people of Jabal al-Arab. Something that seems to have somehow slipped under the international radar is that under Israeli protection, the Druze-populated region of south-western Syria has become a de facto narcoterrorist state which is flooding its neighbours with illegal drugs. It's as if the US had allied with the Sinaloa Cartel to create a buffer zone along the Mexican border.

NEW - multiple, heavy #Jordan airstrikes targeting drug cells & #captagon facilities in #Suwayda tonight. Strikes have hit in Shahba, core Druze ‘National Guard’ territory, as well as in SE rural areas from where guided balloons are regularly launched towards #Jordan.

On Monday Marco Rubio said that we cannot allow Iran to have control over the strait of Hormuz, picking and choosing who enters and what currency they use. There is a very important reason why the administration feels this way: because it would be the greatest military defeat in US history. We lost in Vietnam and Afghanistan in a sense but never like this. If we leave now with the new status quo being Iran controls the strait then we have transformed a relegated, isolated, sanction crippled nation into a global power. Leaving now is an admission of a tremendous defeat and it’s also the best possible thing to do. This is the trap that Trump is now in all because he listened to Netanyahu and launched the insane war of choice.

Lebanon has 180,000 Palestinian refugees. They have no rights or claims on Lebanon or the Lebanese. In fact, Lebanon can sure them for damage done by the PLO when its militia ruled Lebanon and started a civil war. The UN must resettle these Palestinians anywhere outside of Lebanon. That’s the extent of Lebanese responsibility (put up with Palestinian troublemaking for 78 years).

Stop imposing your radical beliefs on others. Stop getting involved in discussions where no one is welcoming you. Stop pushing people to stand even more against you. Zionist and Israel are the people of my Christ I would put them above anyone and that’s my legal right. The UAE are my people who nurtured me and protected me and I put them above anyone as well. None is my master only people raised in societies like yours with your beliefs have masters. Now fuck off

Rania’s late father belonged to a generation of Druze romantics who came of age before the 1960s. In a sense, they were our equivalent of the hippie or “soixante-huitard” generation. This was an eclectic bunch that adhered to different ideologies. Most, including Rania’s father, were Syrian nationalists, typically supporters of the SSNP. (In fact, the Abdul Khalek clan was traditionally one of the more SSNP-leaning among the large Druze families in Lebanon.) Others were Arab nationalists or communists, and a few even took an Islamist turn. What mattered less was the specific ideology than the underlying impulse that animated them. Theirs was a desire to transcend the confines of a small, largely tribal religious community and merge into a larger collective identity, whether Syrian, Arab, or proletarian. Interestingly, though, it seems that many of them understood, at some level, that this was an illusion. Very few took the aspiration to its logical conclusion by marrying outside the Druze community. Most kept a foot in their own group, perhaps as a form of security, treating it as a kind of fortress to retreat to should these broader projects of transcendence ever fail. Much can be said about that group - and they were, indeed, often naive and out of step with reality - but it is hard not to feel a certain sense of loss at their passing. What is fading now is not only a generation, but also the very spirit of political romanticism. We live today in a far more disenchanted, even cynical, age than theirs.

I spent 18 months working in American archives to collect hundreds of declassified U.S. documents pertaining to the Lebanese/Israeli May 17 agreement. I published the piece below after reading each one. For decades, the Lebanese have been told that the treaty was “Worse than Camp David”; that the Lebanese state surrendered to an Israeli diktat; that the United States colluded with Israel against Lebanon; and that Israel harbored irredentist claims on our land all the way to the Litani. Nonsense—all of it. Israeli demands were, for the most part, security-driven. Simply put, Israel wanted Lebanon to prevent cross-borders attacks against her territories. Hardly unexpected considering the PLO's agency in the south since 1969. Even the late Joseph Samaha, not exactly a friend of Israel—he was the founder of Al-Akhbar, Hezbollah’s mouthpiece in Lebanon—acknowledged that Israeli conditions for withdrawal were mostly driven by security concerns in a piece he published in As-Safir on May 19, 1983 (p11 "احتمالات ما بعد الاتّفاق"). In addition to security concerns, Israel was seeking an honorable exit for her ally Saad Haddad and the normalization of relations with Lebanon. Nothing Israel obtained in the agreement threatened Lebanese sovereignty. What ultimately did destroy sovereignty was Syria’s securing full control over Lebanon, when Hafez al-Assad instructed his local minions, Nabih Berri and Walid Jumblatt, to oppose the treaty. They did—and what followed were the last forty years of sorrow. Once again, Lebanon has a chance to establish peace with Israel. Once again, regional and local forces—Hezbollah, Berri, and Jumblatt—are working against peace. If they prevail now, as they did in 1983, the coming decades will repeat the horrors of the past.
