Today, we remember a legend. On this day in history, Harambe would have celebrated another birthday. An icon that became part of internet history, American culture, and an entire generation’s timeline. Tomorrow marks 10 years since we lost him. Ten years since the moment the world stopped scrolling and collectively mourned something bigger than a meme. He became a symbol of loyalty, strength, chaos, unity, and the strange beauty of the internet bringing millions of people together for one cause: never forgetting Harambe. Everyone remembers where they were when they heard the news. And somehow, a decade later, his legacy still lives on. Gone, but never forgotten. Rest easy to a true patriot. 🕊️🇺🇸 May 27, 1999 — May 28, 2016 Forever in our hearts.

@GoodGuyGuaranty From a “can’t believe you just said that to me with a straight face” perspective, I think you can. It’s ridiculous, but realtors are gonna realtor.

@kyle_e_walker I have had to gently cajole and provide some extra context for it to do be a bit more yo to date. It does make me wonder how long it will take for new the dplyr verbs to percolate through

Our beloved Claude - even with access in this case to multiple years of conversations with me about mapping - defaults to a year-and-a-half-old release of MapLibre. A large percentage of people using AI uncritically are actually 18 months behind. Use this to your advantage.

If someone had told me in 1990 that I would be sending a post on a microblogging site (not a thing), about writing natural language instructions to an AI agent to create symbolic mathematics, rewrite a paper, then write the code in a readable language (python, not released) to simulate the algorithm in the paper, while on a plane with fast wi-fi (not existing), on a 3lb fast mac with a hi-res color screen (the first powerbook with a color screen came in 1993, 640x400, 7lbs) and 10+ hours of battery life, I would not have believed them. All of these things ranged from the "does not exist yet" to the "are you completely bonkers". 35 years. Everything is amazing and nobody is happy.

@BMJYorston Having been out of London for 3 years in NYC, I was trying to find comparable apartments in London to what I have now. I was shocked that monthly rents now are £2.5-£3k for a modern apartment with amenities

NYC salaries are much higher than London, but at the same time: - rent is 4k not 1k - eating out is $100s not £10s - buying food in a Supermarket is mental ($40 for a steak Vs £5) Add in zero holiday, and zilch workers' rights and the disparity starts to look rather smaller

There was a beautiful moment in time when all you had to do was > know a little bit of excel and powerpoint > know some basic accounting > be willing to work 70 hours a week And you were handed a 6 figure job in NYC that could scale and set you up for life While I don’t think those jobs are going away any time soon, everything points to the fact that the 1st and 2nd points I mentioned above can easily be automated using AI The only valuable thing left will be work ethic + curiosity + willingness to adapt and learn That will be the only competitive edge for new graduates in an AI world. The barriers to entry for technical skills are quickly falling apart Today, AI is just catching up with someone with a couple years of experience on the job In a few years, it will probably become better than a top bucket analyst or associate at the technical pieces of the job

I don’t think people realize how big this is. GPT-5 is now proposing experiments, executing them in autonomous labs, learning from the results, and iterating. 36,000+ reactions. 40% cost reduction. This is not software anymore. This is automated scientific progress.
OpenAI@OpenAI

We worked with @Ginkgo to connect GPT-5 to an autonomous lab, so it could propose experiments, run them at scale, learn from the results, and decide what to try next. That closed loop brought protein production cost down by 40%.

Advice needed. At home, I am currently paying for ChatGPT and Gemini. I really want/need to get Claude Code, and I feel returns on investment on a 3rd service are decreasing, even negative (too much context-switching). I already never use nanobanana etc. What should I drop? ChatGPT or Gemini? I have come to really like Gemini, and am inclined to keep it. Or are there compelling reasons to keep all of them?

“Big board with a lot of lightbulbs on it” has to be one of the greatest lost technologies of all time. We’ve forgotten how to do such a thing. If we were to attempt to replicate this it would be using a screen.
