@vasuman @gfodor Your insights are super interesting! As a layman, I’m confused by terms like “dogfooding” would you mind explaining for the uninitiated?

As someone who worked at Reality Labs: the Metaverse had real legs but was obliterated by middle management completely out of touch with how young people actually use technology. I built a V1 tool that game developers genuinely needed, and the moment it was done, it got shipped to a team in London (to die), and I was reassigned to a "higher-priority project" that zero developers asked for. Multiply that by every team, and you'll understand why this never took off yet cost 80 billion.
Polymarket@Polymarket

JUST IN: Meta announces they'll be shutting down the Metaverse, after pouring $80,000,000,000.00 into the project.

@flashmozzg @weegeeyaboi Retroactive hate doesn't count, I can hate DX9 now for being overcomplicated and mixing shaders and FVF in an unclear way, but it rightfully so was not the sentiment at the time

@__silent_ @weegeeyaboi Yeah. People hated on early 3D graphics but that was years AFTER they introduced. At the time, people loved 3D even if it looked like ass. "PlayStation can produce mind boggling effects" and all that.

@weegeeyaboi I think? hope??? they mean 3D TVs and such, in which case I agree with that one particular point. It didn't even cross my mind that it could have been about 3D graphics

"use as few dependencies as possible" by moving TLS into the standard library is just the tech version of accounting fraud.
chronark@chronark

@albertocardenas that's a very good point actually, I haven't considered that over the years I developed this desire to use as few dependencies as possible though. especially in the javascript ecosystem, there are so many vulnerabilities in dependencies every other day

@never_released Often this shit would've been covered up either way. This is just a convenient scapegoat for them to shift the discussion away from "who is responsible for coverup and why" to "le illegals".

@dannstacks @melinoesfrog In runs leading up to that you can see him lamenting his decision but thinking that there is no going back.

@flashmozzg @melinoesfrog I think youre just misunderstanding what im saying. The scene in which chronos is redeemed happens after the last run in his questline, every run after he is "cured". There are however a great many runs leading up to that.

rlly interesting how the ending of hades 2 makes a good majority of players be done with the game fully. it’s a roguelike lol youre supposed to play after youre done. this phenomena didnt happen with hades bc its ending was better

@dannstacks @melinoesfrog It kind of did. In my playthrough at least. Don't know if it was due to updated lines/changes they did in the post release patch or not.

@melinoesfrog To be fair, i understand that you cannot remove the physical embodiement of linear time from your universe without breaking it. I just wish his reconditioning had happened over multiple runs instead of just hitting him with the Flashback Beam

@raincollector_ It's still kind of true in a sense that it's not "nobody" but "rarely". Simply because why would you focus your ability on a single element when Nen can be so versatile?

@flashmozzg that ability actually didnt summon water it only works on rainy days and the user just brings the rain to them it is of course water manipulation though yes i agree no yes i dont agree with the first tweet

@raincollector_ @KOM4CHI There was a guy with ability that involved summoning water + surfboard. Killua qualifies as lightning. Are Kurapika's chains "metal element"? Is Feitan's sun fire?

@SebAaltonen C can throw exceptions. Just dereference a nullptr or divide by 0. Or on x64-64, deref any pointer where the 1st 16 bits aren't uniform. It just doesn't have a standard facility for catching them.

Exceptions were a big design mistake. Hidden gotos all over the code base. Not easy to write "Strong Exception Safe" code. Rust returns error codes just like C. Wrapped in syntactic sugar. Return type can be error or actual type. Much nicer design.
'(Robert Smith)@stylewarning

I'm overhearing a FAANG tech meeting about how this 10?-year product written in C is being transitioned ("modernized") to C++. Started by changing to a C++ compiler, and slowly rewriting to use classes/exceptions, &c. It's been 3 months, and the C++ service keeps failing in prod.

Exceptions are an anti-pattern and we have known it for a long time. I can't believe some big companies are porting old C code to C++ because they want exceptions. Did they get the memo 20 years ago?

@nehgrei @kilovollt Paige's ult goes through the whole map in a +-straight line. The guy accidentally used his ult instead of opening the shop (dunno how, keys are far apart by default) which accidentally ended up killing Geist on the different end of the map.

@TylerGlaiel That's why there are usually backups (a few) to revert to the "last good one". Like what if the power cuts out in the middle of the save?

"save files shouldn't ever get corrupted, I am handling all the edge cases" colliding with reality because even a super tiny percent of faulty hard drives or ram times 1.5 million people playing means many save files will get corrupted completely out of my control. next patch should have an error message for this
