🔸Give workers representation on corporate boards. Many European nations require worker representation on corporate boards. Germany requires companies with 500 or more employees to give workers 1/3rd of the seats on the supervisory board. For companies with 2000 or more employees, that rises to 50%. This setup ensures that workers are treated fairly and fosters a long-term view of operations rather than decision-making based on short-term stock performance.

Workers are not treated fairly in America. Workers' rights have been eroded, experienced employees are tossed aside for short-term stock gains, and wages are not keeping up with the cost of living, while wealth inequality soars. Here are four ways we can address this:

🔸Strengthen protections for unions Unions have been under heavy attack since the 1970s, reducing the share of workers with union membership from 30% in the late 60s to just 10% today. Corporations not only spend heavily on lobbying to weaken worker rights, but they also spend $400 million each year on what they call “union avoidance”. Amazon, which has 1/3 of its warehouse workers relying on food assistance to survive, spent $26 million on anti-union consultants last year and has engaged in illegal union-busting, as have several other major companies. 60 million workers want to join unions, but only 16 million are covered by union contracts. This shows how successful corporations have been in blocking organized labor.

🔸Mandate employee ownership programs or profit sharing with workers. In Europe, almost 7 million workers are part of employee ownership trusts. These are legal frameworks that hold a controlling stake in a company, meaning over 50% of the shares, on behalf of the employees. This provides profit-sharing for the workers and, by having a controlling stake, gives them a stronger voice in the governance of the company. Some countries, including Mexico and France, have mandatory profit-sharing requirements for workers.

🔸 A higher minimum wage. In 1968, the federal minimum wage was a livable wage and kept a family of three above the poverty line. Today, the minimum wage has half the buying power and is a poverty wage for a single person in every state across the nation.

More and more public schools are welcoming transgender teachers into the lives of young children. The schools claim that refusing to employ them would be considered "discrimination." Should laws be created to ban transgender teachers, or would that be discrimination? 🚫
