I’ve taken 40+ years to get around to reading Hemingway. Not sure I should have bothered. Why does he render the speech of Spanish ‘peasants’ into some weird form of Baroque pidgin English? Just... awful.

@tomvvardle Tom, no one is exalting Franco anymore, and haven’t for ages. The left is dragging this corpse out again for political mileage. The vast majority of Spaniards are sick of it, or simply don’t care.

Like any country, Spain has plenty of ‘unresolved’ history. Almost inevitably, given the current polarisation of culture and politics, the new Law of Democratic Memory will be an excuse for a highly partisan flogging of dead horses. It will be a new, improved form of forgetting.
