@freddoso The drop from last year is very real. My comment was in regards to comparing it to murder rates back to 1960. Murder rates have dropped significantly no doubt, but the historical comparisons are more nuanced.

@freddoso @ChrisJBakke Yes? You just set the wash cycle, come back at least 30 or so minutes later, then transfer. You can easily wait an hour or two if needed, between wash and dry cycles.

You will live in the AI slop apartment. Your clothes washer will be under your kitchen sink. You have no dryer. There's wood paneling on the walls for some reason. You will smile at the candle that is burning 4 inches away from your 24 foot tall curtains. You pay $20,000/mo and can't access the stairs up to your shitty loft bedroom. There is no bathroom. @freddoso Need to look at violent crime stats, not just murders. Many people that would have died previously are saved by modern trauma medicine. So 1960's murders become 2026 attempted murders. Violent crime stats are down too, but no where near as much.

The earliest DC homicide data I have found so far are from the late 1930s and early 1940s, and it seems the totals usually hovered around 80 per year. So this is definitely next-level stuff going on.

@freddoso The 250th anniversary celebrations are going to be an interesting variable, though. Summer events and cookouts are notoriously dangerous scenarios.

@moniqueo59 I'd also point out that 2024 was not that good, except in comparison to 2023. DC was at its safest in the early 2010s when I moved away. There was so much optimism then, but bad choices were made. Yet even then, I bet it was still nowhere near what it could be.

@Heminator I think more importantly they need to incarcerate the couple hundred scumbags who commit 90% of each city's crime. That's what they've been doing in DC, and it's what they did in NYC in the 1990s, and it works every time it's tried. This is a solved problem.

Yesterday, I passed a couple of National Guardsman chatting w/ a woman walking her dog. There's no doubt their presence in DC has helped. You may hate Trump for all sorts of reasons -- but he was right about this. Blue cities just have to put more visible cops on the streets.
