As we begin the countdown to World Refugee Day, we are bringing back activist takeovers of our TFN socials here and on Insta. Next week we will kick these off with the stories and experiences of an Afghan teenaged girl/artist/women’s rights advocate. Watch this space!

Spending my birthday weekend fighting off fascists and bigots. It reminds me of a teaching from my father. My father said “aggression is a sign of weakness. Now kindness that is powerful. What can you do in the face of kindness?” It’s a call to all of us to never lose our humanity. Maybe we need to be a little bit kinder, a little more gentle, a little more loving, a little more truthful, and honest. We are witnessing increased violence against indigenous, women, girls and diverse gendered folks, the love surrounding this movement is more powerful than this hate. I wouldn’t spend my birthday weekend any other way. It is always a privilege to stand in love and resistance, fighting for a better world for all.

Today I met with Gazans whose family members are trapped in life threatening situations in Gaza, being denied entry into Canada. That includes children and mothers, many lacking access to basic sanitation, medical care, or sufficient food and drinking water. Since January 2024, only 886 people have arrived under the Gaza temporary resident visa program, while 4,500 applications are in limbo. The Liberal government must act now to save the lives of Palestinian Canadians, their families and their loved ones from this genocide.
