My favorite is the one that suggests that everyone needs to be able to tow a 10k pound excavator.

It's insane how easy it is to trigger the "my car is my entire personality" people. My comment said that the truck in the video was "unnecessarily large". I suspect the venn diagram of these people and the "everyone gets insulted so easily nowadays" is a circle.

My right to not have to dodge someone going 100mph on a public road is more important than your right to go 100mph. If you don’t understand this you are literally a child and don’t deserve driving privileges.

@lock_dok @_kuzcospoison @chvrlie_js @jakeonrails Again, cyclist behavior is just not dangerous compared to driver behavior. A cyclist running a stop sign is dangerous to the cyclist. A driver running a stop sign is dangerous to every human being nearby. Nobody should take you seriously if you're equating those things.

@IlliniProgrammr @chvrlie_js @jakeonrails Your statement isn't supported by the real world, though. If cyclists are extremely dangerous to pedestrians show me the data that doesn't also say that drivers are orders of magnitude more dangerous. I don't support wasting time on things that aren't a meaningful problem.

@frigidlight @chvrlie_js @jakeonrails I agree. Bicyclists are extremely dangerous to pedestrians while cars often have lots of physical separation from pedestrians these days due to lobbying. Bikes should be required to have an automatic brake for red lights and to stop sidewalk riding, like those shopping carts.

@chvrlie_js @jakeonrails In a world of unlimited resources, yes, regulate all cyclists. However, we don't live in a world of unlimited resources and I don't think the resources we do have should be spent regulating away a safety risk that effectively doesn't exist compared to that of drivers in cars.

@frigidlight @jakeonrails The standard is adherence to law. Should individual cyclists be held accountable for their actions and the consequences, or should more regulations and restrictions be imposed on all cyclists to ensure order?

@lock_dok @_kuzcospoison @chvrlie_js @jakeonrails You need a test and a license to operate your vehicle because the potential for injuring others is massive with your vehicle. That is not true for bicycles and thus the requirements are different. Same for insurance and license plates.

@chvrlie_js @jakeonrails It’s not bias to say there should be different standards for people operating 2000 pounds of metal at 50mph.

@frigidlight @jakeonrails I don’t. I use the same standards for collective responsibility that the OP is advocating for, without bias.

@toonstop @samgreeenberg The problem is that there are about three perfectly reasonable motorists on the road at any given time. Most motorists are selfish, dangerous, or just ignorant about the danger they are putting other people (and themselves) in constantly.

@samgreeenberg I don’t think that’s a fair assessment. The more aggressive onboard safety devices you add, the higher risk of injury as a result of the failure of those devices. Perfectly reasonable motorists know the roads, including LEOs who could enforce speeding laws and fix this.

@frigidlight @jakeonrails Show me where we aren’t. That’s how the Constitution works. We don’t only have rights when the government decides to specify one for us. This is America not North Korea or China or Cuba

@chvrlie_js @jakeonrails This is a disingenuous comparison. You can't pretend like the danger posed to society by bicyclists and drivers is even remotely close to the same.

@jakeonrails Cyclists should have to get a Bicycle License for the privilege to ride. Cyclists break the laws all of the time so it only makes sense to put more strict regulations and restrictions on all cyclists, right?

@liftblog I thought Doppelmayr came out to Cannon and said that a tram would be *cheaper* because the buildings could be reused? Also, the slides from the public meeting show a projected tram repalcement cost at >$25M so this seems within the expected range. What changed?

If the State of New Hampshire wants to keep the Cannon tram instead of doing a gondola, they're going to spend a boatload of tax dollars on it. A new gondola would probably cost half as much. Governor Sununu pointed this out to Cannon a few years ago.
Lift Blog@liftblog

New: Leitner-Poma of America was the only bidder for the @cannonmountain aerial tram modernization project. LPOA's $29.035 million bid is 60% higher than the state's budget allocation of $18 million. Doppelmayr/Garaventa did not bid.

@bikelakecity If we cleaned up the slums in Salt Lake City, the people of Draper would be less worried about visitors from SLC traveling to their city by train. I'm in favor of more interconnectedness, but we have to clear out some of the rot first.

Isn't it fun (?) how a couple rich NIMBYs in Draper can prevent the entire Wasatch Front from having a functional and convenient Light Rail system?

I just love this idea that inner cities are full of criminals itching to do crime in the suburbs and the only thing stopping them is lack of public transit. This was a huge reason behind opposition to a train to KOP when I lived in Philly and it was moronic then too.

@Gentler_App do you have a suggestion for how to track alpine touring so that the elevation gain is shown in your app? I usually record backcountry skiing / alpine touring as an XC ski in Apple Health but it looks like the elevation gain isn't shown in Gentler Streak.
