Retail's got it all wrong when it comes to long term options. If I only buy leaps on stocks I want to own, why would I bother buying the leap instead of the stock? If I should be ok with owning the stock anyway, why take on the added risk of theta decaying the contact to zero just to be left with nothing? And why buy to open options on a stock I want to hold? The only way I get the shares on a long option is to exercise if it's ITM, which almost never makes sense after paying a premium to open originally. And if I'm longing OTM leaps, then I'm left with no backup as I can't exercise the contract. My only two options are then cut for a loss, or let it go to zero, neither of which result in me holding shares. It would make more sense to sell to open cash secured puts. Then you'd get to collect the premium, and worst case scenario the shares if the contract expires ITM. There is no unlimited loss when it comes to cash secured puts or covered calls, despite what others may want you to think, because the worst that can happen is you end up with shares. And if you're already ok with holding shares anyway, isn't that exactly what you want? You get theta to work for you, not against you, and you end up with the shares if you're wrong. That sounds like a win win to me. Why long leaps when I can short cash secured puts?

Why would anyone full port options? Options contracts routinely go to zero. Why anyone would have more than 1-2% into an earnings options trade is beyond me. The reward doesn't outweigh the risk imo.
