In August, I made mention of the fact that there were minors taken by the Tinubu govt and locked up secretly because they came out to protest, and they responded that it wasn’t true but today on the news, the same minors I spoke about, who were illegally arrested for participating in the #EndBadGovernance peaceful protest collapsed in court. So what would the government say now?

'I have names of 37 young people. These are people that are 13-year-olds, 14-year-olds and 15-year-olds that were arrested by the Tinubu-led government.' - @TheSerahIbrahim questions why 18-year-olds can be barred from university under new regulations while the government can imprison those under 18.

It is a crying shame that Nigerian authorities decided to charge poor, homeless, malnourished and out-of-school children to court for “participating in #EndBadGovernance protest”. This is the mirror of a society whose soul is lost. Obviously malnourished, the children slumped on Friday morning in open court since the Nigerian authorities deliberately denied them of food after keeping them in unjust detention for months. How despicable? The persecution of children by the Bola Tinubu administration is unacceptable and constitutes a gross violation of human rights. There should not be an arraignment in the first place. These children should be enrolled to school and provided basic amenities. The criminals in power are those who should be behind bars; certainly not these innocent kids. For everyone involved in this gory experience, let them be reminded that the verdict of history beckons!

They were hungry. They spoke up. Now they're in prison. Teenagers as young as 14 have been detained for exercising their right to protest in Nigeria. This is inhumane. Release these children immediately! #EndBadGovernance

On the impact of LLM fine tuning … these results strongly suggest that almost all knowledge in large language models is learned during pretraining, .. only limited instruction tuning data is necessary to teach models to produce high quality output. arxiv.org/abs/2305.11206

#weekendhack What does the UX of editing charts with natural language look like? (enabled by @openai #chatgpt). Below, we apply transforms to the data & add new marks (update) a seaborn chart (code)! Some kinks here and there but reliable results so far. @npew

LLMs (#ChatGPT, #gpt4) tuned to a specific domain can be quite helpful assistants! - Me: Here's a dataset (windvectors.csv) ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ - ChatGPT: Well here are 4 relevant questions And here is a chart! - Me : Well .. that looks pretty!

Always exciting to see advances in training smaller models that excel on code generation tasks. In this case, a Meet in the Middle(MIM) training paradigm yields smaller models with competitive performance. MIM-2.7B appears to outperform LLAMA-65B, PALM-65BCodex12B (but not code davinci) on several code infilling tasks on the HumanEval dataset. These "little" advances can really save on significant deployment costs, making them very very important! arxiv.org/pdf/2303.07295…

Meet In the Middle (MIM) : A New Pretraining Paradigm. MIM(2.7B) outperforms CodeGen 16B, Incoder 6.7B, PaLM 540B, LLaMA 65B, FIM 2.7B in Code generation tasks. Read arxiv.org/abs/2303.07295 to know why MIM could be a new pre-training paradigm for left-to-right and infilling LMs.

An unusual but profound way to build a research career. - Be a generalist, learn about multiple areas (I know ... sounds like a career mistake .. but) - Find advances in one area and skillfully apply them in solving problems in a different (often disjoint) area. I recall a lecture by @kchonyc several years ago (~2018) touching on historical developments in DL and he mentioned how work by Alex Graves (previously part of Schmidhuber's group) moved the field forward by applying LSTMs to multiple different problem domains (long sequence generation, phoneme classification, writing recognition, speech recognition etc) and blowing away the existing benchmarks. What other common examples of this approach come to mind? Pros and cons?

I’ve been informed of evil reports & outright lies trying to scare the good civil servants that their jobs are under threat under me, these are LIES! The workers of Lagos have been underpaid & undervalued, & they deserve job security & better pay! And I’m here to bring that!
Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour@GRVlagos

Lagos can afford to pay its civil service better. On my 1st day in office, I will issue an executive order for it to be looked into. Contract staff will be converted into permanent staff & they will get the benefits that come with it. We deserve better. Èkó E dìde!! ~ GRV.

The law does not require that collation be done on the basis of uploaded results, but on results manually transferred to the collation centres. But where there is a contest, the uploaded result supercedes. — INEC Chairman, Mahmoud Yakubu. I wish Nigerians took this seriously 👇🏾
