Just witnessed a disgusting travel ball display this weekend. Just got back from a 3 day tourney with my 9 year old. Note: Travel ball frustrates me, but I have chosen to let him start younger than his brothers did because of the coaching he is getting, it's a JUCO coach that is teaching him a ton and puts players first over winning (although they are good). I saw the following: Team that won championship today pitched 2 kids over 90 each, one in semis and one in ship. Kid in ship was phenomenal, but who knows when his arm will give. Worst part, they each pitched 20-30 pitches day prior. Another team (didn't even make playoffs) had one kid over 90 and one kid over 100 in a single game, and they both pitched one more time in the tourney. Makes my blood boil, their futures are being stolen for plastic trophy's and meaningless medals. Parents: if you have a coach like this, even if they win and teach your kid a lot...RUN, even if your kid is not the one pitching. If your kid is the one pitching, shame on you too. Tourneys need to move to pitch counts, not innings. Sitting here watching Bama vs Gators. Everyone chases numbers. Radar guns, 60 times, exit velo… the stuff that gets headlines. But development isn’t built in a showcase stat line. Justice Lebron didn’t check every “wow” box early. What Alabama saw wasn’t hype, it was projection, instincts, and real baseball skill. They trusted their eyes. And here’s the part people ignore, players peak at different stages. Some at 10. Some at 14. Some at 17. Some at 20. If you’re only chasing early results, you’re going to miss late bloomers every time. Now look where he is. Trust the process, Rome wasn’t built over night!
