@AzanZuhair With such constrained inflows, BML obviously can’t realistically support both card spending and critical imports at the same level. The priority seems to be essential business imports over online shopping and subscriptions.

Hello @bankofmaldives Tried yesterday to make a 35$ payment to MyUS, declined. Tried today, declined. Tried the debit card. Tried the credit card. No luck. Is this what we deserve? Record profits were made using our savings. But we are made to suffer. Unacceptable.

In 2025, Maldives generated approximately USD 5.5 billion from 2.24 million tourists — averaging nearly USD 2,500 per visitor. That means: • 100,000 lost tourists = around USD 250 million in lost revenue • Projected cancellations and reduced demand could place 150,000–200,000 tourists at risk • Estimated total impact: USD 375–500 million or more This is not simply a slowdown in arrivals. This is a major tourism revenue shock affecting the wider economy, businesses, employment, and national income. The bigger picture we can see in two months.

@AzanZuhair I do understand the frustration people have. But directing that frustration at the wrong people or acting like the bank alone created the situation doesn’t help. BML is reacting to economic realities.

@AzanZuhair If not by the government, then by the Bank itself. People keep talking as if unlimited access to $ is some guaranteed entitlement, while ignoring the actual pressure on reserves and liquidity. Banking decisions are ultimately driven by numbers, not emotion.

@hamza_latheef That’s the thing. These controls already exist, but the volume of such alerts is so overwhelming that it’s not humanly possible to act on each one. Which is why a broader, blanket control had to be introduced.

@gallowtatas Not an IT tech but perhaps the system can send an alert to banks solely when a card is used abroad when the holder is in the Maldives. Otherwise the bank gets no notification at all.

To address the strain on the bank’s dollar reserves by the use abroad of cards held by third parties the proper way to proceed would be as follows;

4. On a case-by-case basis BML should report any misuse of its card to law enforcement and while the investigation is pending, suspend the privileges granted to the cardholder.

@gallowtatas @Mabrook_MV @JenniferAishath Ur math is wrong. Foreign card transactions usually fall within 16.5 - 18 range. The modus operandi is correct, but if the bank cannot identify the main individuals, punishing all citizens and pulling data from immigration records is unfair and invasive.

The real question is how many instances have there been where someone has taken 10-20 cards abroad and used dollar allowance? Even if they did, its $5000. Is that too much to handle by a bank which makes 2.5 billion??

Hello @Visa @Mastercard @AmericanExpress @bankofmaldives is telling us customers that card networks are charging fees on transactions done in USD. Are they asking us to contact you to clarify the card network fees. Are you charging extra fees on USD transactions? cc @HKurusee

@WhoIsFishie @tedry Sure, exposing API keys is not good practice and should be avoided. That said, the BML API key or partial card number alone isn't enough to perform transactions, so there's nothing actionable for scammers with just that information.

Hajj Corp got a new website is cause their old ones src was exposed along with BML api keys and customer details which included partial card numb This was securely disclosed to NCSA but no breach notification was given to users affected Whole thing was swept under the rug

The USD3000 is a bitch to get. You need a diagnostic letter by specialists in Maldives. And an official statement of your appointment with the foreign hospital. Even then they only give when you provide your bills from the hospital

@yaanteoa @RaifShareef_ @bankofmaldives Do you have proof of your claim? I highly doubt a BML Call Centre employee would speak to a customer in such a manner, especially when they know all calls are recorded.

@RaifShareef_ @bankofmaldives Agreed but you’d expect at least a decent, empathetic response from a place that claims to provide customer service training. Clearly, that wasn’t the case.

If you're using a @bankofmaldives credit card, consider cancelling it. My mom spotted a suspicious Cebu Air charge, called BML support and they told her it was her fault. No help, no protection, no assistance.

@aisherth @sikandhari So is it ok for the employees to exchange their USD in black market & steal the exchange profit? Because that's exactly why they are protesting now. Companies should pay the employees in MVR at 20MVR per USD if that's the current market rate.
