Your Bitcoin sits locked behind an unbreakable math vault. The lock? secp256k1. The powerful elliptic curve encryption Bitcoin has used since 2009. For 17 years, it’s been ironclad. Even the fastest supercomputers couldn’t crack your private key from your public address. Billions of dollars sit safely... for now. But quantum computers break the rules. They use a mind-bending trick called Shor’s algorithm, harnessing quantum physics (superposition and entanglement) to solve insanely hard math problems that would take classical computers longer than the age of the universe. One moment it’s “decades away.” The next? Game over. Yesterday, Google Quantum AI dropped a bombshell paper. Not hype from a startup, this is Google. They updated the numbers: A future quantum machine could crack Bitcoin’s secp256k1 private keys in under 9 minutes using dramatically fewer resources (around 1,200 logical qubits and tens of millions of Toffoli gates, a huge leap from previous estimates).
