@DanGordon310595 @JoshDehaas @Arrivou 60% of federal revenue comes from Ontario/Quebec the main benefactors. However the idea is if successful, the blueprint of the Alto corridor could be copy and pasted around Canada reducing "feasibility studies". Think long term.

@JoshDehaas @Arrivou Why wouldn't similar reasoning apply to a high-speed rail? I wouldn't be so petty and play regional politics if I had to see tax dollars go towards building new infrastructure in parts of Canada where I don't live.

There are about 22 million taxpayers in Canada. A $90 billion high-speed rail train would cost every single taxpayer $4,000. Just build. And that’s if it doesn’t go over budget. Before operating subsidies. The vast majority of those taxpayers would never set foot on it.

@petitben59 @MrJFTaylor @SamHersh01 It's not English Canada, it's not even most of Canada, only like 20% of all Canadians strongly oppose this the other 80% are in favor or indifferent. The support is there across all of Canada. Such a weird attempt to separate Canadians by language???

@MrJFTaylor @SamHersh01 I truly don't understand English Canada. These same questions were raised before the construction of cpr, the transcanada highway, the confederation bridge, and now the high speed train for Québec city to Windsor corridor. Les mêmes bêtises avant chaque grand projet!

Canada is literally the only G7 country without high speed rail. Conservatives want you to continue to pay sky high prices for gas, worsen congestion on roads and make your commute hours longer. We've been "studying" high speed rail for 50 years - time to get it built.

Pierre Poilievre on the Toronto–Quebec City High-Speed Rail Network: "Conservatives oppose the $90b Liberal-Alto train ... a future Conservative government will cancel this $90b boondoggle altogether."

@PierrePoilievre The idea of being able to get on a train in downtown Toronto then quickly and comfortably go to downtown Montreal sounds horrible.

It's grotesque how American political culture turns absolutely everything (TV shows, hobbies, religion, other countries, etc.) into fodder for an endless Schmittian political trench war. Canada is designated "left". Therefore, American conservatives must performatively hate everything about Canada while American liberals must performatively praise everything about it. Neither view Canada as a real place with real people, but just a political theme park. It's either the Disney Castle or the Haunted Mansion depending on their ideology. Obviously, the reality of Canada doesn't reflect either of these cartoonish hyperreal images. However, this serves as the axiom for most political discourse on the country. It has gotten to the point that Canadians now view their own country through this distorted Americanized lens.

@MarcNixon24 It will take years and hundreds of billions of dollars to rebuild oil fields, ports and energy infrastructure. Canada is pivoting towards rare earth minerals, so even if you believe what trump says about Venezuela's oil it won't happen overnight, Canada has options.

USMCA WAS BUILT ON U.S. DEPENDENCE ON CANADIAN OIL. That was our leverage. That was our insurance policy. With Venezuela soon to be back online and sanctions lifted, the U.S. just reduced its reliance on Canada. That changes everything. Under USMCA, leverage matters more than paperwork. And Canada just lost its biggest card. Now when USMCA gets revisited, Canada negotiates from weakness, not strength. This is what happens when you replace strategy with ideology. Mark Carney and the Liberals wasted 9 months and delivered nothing. We are about to get steamrolled. This is what happens when you vote liberals for 10 years.
The White House@WhiteHouse

"The United States of America has successfully carried out a large scale strike against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, who has been, along with his wife, captured and flown out of the Country. This operation was done in conjunction with U.S. Law Enforcement. Details to follow. There will be a News Conference today at 11 A.M., at Mar-a-Lago. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP"

@MarkJCarney It's not about our global methane % contribution. The EU (and other countries soon) will set emissions standards for their imports. This means if we produce lots of excess methane in our oil sector, they just won't buy our oil, this is necessary for our exports.

Methane emissions are responsible for about 30% of the global rise in temperature to date.   Canada’s new government is taking action to reduce those emissions — to cut pollution, fight climate change, and protect Canadians.
