A farmer dies in April 2026.
His son inherits the farm. The farm has been in the family since 1847.
The farm consists of: 300 acres of grazing pasture, a farmhouse built in 1892, a barn, a milking parlour, two tractors of varying ages, a Land Rover that runs about 70% of the time, and a herd of 180 Hereford-cross cattle.
On paper, the farm is worth approximately £3.2 million. This is because land near him has been bought recently by a London hedge fund looking for carbon credits, which has dragged the comparable value of every field within forty miles upward to a number nobody local can justify.
In cash, the farm produces a profit of about £28,000 a year in a good year. In a bad year it loses money. The son also works as a fencing contractor three days a week to keep the operation viable.
The inheritance tax bill on a £3.2 million estate, even at the reduced 20% rate, comes to approximately £140,000 after the increased threshold is applied. The son does not have £140,000. The son has never had £140,000. The son has £4,200 in his current account and an overdraft.
The son sells 60 acres to a developer to pay the tax. The developer puts solar panels on the 60 acres. The remaining herd cannot be sustained on the reduced land. The herd is sold. The barn becomes a holiday let.
A different family eats Brazilian beef this Christmas without knowing why the price went up.
The Treasury collects £140,000.
The land never produces British food again.

🚨The Minnesota fraud empire is falling: Yesterday 15 fraudsters were charged and $90 million was busted. The MSM tried to cover for the fraudsters. @GovTimWalz called it "white supremacy" to expose it and @IlhanMN is completely SILENT. Independent journalism defeated an entire fraud network upheld by billions of dollars with support from corrupt politicians who allowed this fraud and the MSM who failed to report it. Major win for America and hardworking law-abiding taxpaying citizens. This is just the beginning. Arrest them all.

@CNBC Calculate the damage to local communities from small business closures and job losses because they can’t compete with Amazon.

@richardosefton Did you steal the top part of his hair. That's not very nice of you. Give it back.

This man raped little girls, he killed little kids. This man hopefully is not long for this world, and when he is gone, I can’t wait to party.

This scumbag uglier than ever.

@MarinaPurkiss The wall to wall coverage is pretty much wall to wall. This isn’t a rigged game.

I welcome HMRC’s conclusion, which has cleared me of any wrongdoing.
I have been exonerated by HMRC of the accusation that I deliberately sought to avoid tax.
When purchasing a home of my own with a mortgage, I did not own any other property and had no personal financial interest in the court-instructed trust set up to manage my son’s financial award. I was advised by experts that I should pay stamp duty at the standard rate.
I set out to pay the correct amount of tax. I took reasonable care and acted in good faith, based on the expert advice I received, and HMRC has accepted this.
I have always sought to act with integrity, and I believe politicians should be held to high standards - that is why I resigned from government and cooperated fully with HMRC.
I wanted to ensure that I paid every penny that I owed, and have done so. I am relieved that my family can now move on - and that I can get on with my job.

@BernieSanders By the way, the jobs are going whoever is in power. To think otherwise is a little short sighted. The most important thing is managing the transition. These people at least understand a bit about what's coming. They seem quite well positioned to help.
English

@BernieSanders Perhaps he should have taken a few from skid row to help navigate the creation of a new and fruitful relationship between the east and the west.

@ZackPolanski How do you suggest we pay for freezing energy prices? Do we not tax wealth already? How will Nationalising water be more cost efficient? Won't you need to also own the civil engineering firms needed to fix the system? Admit it it's all a shit show.

To anyone considering a leadership challenge I say - put the country first, not your own interests or those you might claim are the interests of the party.
Keir Starmer has a massive democratic mandate from the public, nobody has the right to seek to depose him, nobody.
Not Wes, not Ed, not Andy, not Angie.
Yes Keir is unpopular in the polls, that’s current public sentiment - it’s not a mandate for getting rid of him. Opinion polls are snapshots of opinions. Local election results are always an opportunity to register a protest. Labour has a job to do, we’re not even two years in yet, things are tough - a leadership challenge would be self indulgent and illogical - in my view.

@SangitaMyska In your dreams...... Unless you are suggesting that rules will be flexed to meet your expectations.

@Heccles94 Would you prefer they didn't report on such matters? I would have thought it was in everyone's interest to understand how all of our representatives approach their responsibilities to HMRC. It's how the public sector is funded. If taxes aren't paid, our public services lose out.

@mrdenson3k @Michael38994161 @BarackObama @jamestalarico @GinaHinojosaTX Interesting take! The relationship between the west and the east is probably one of the most urgent and pressing global issues of our time. To suggest otherwise is at best, poor judgement. Go to Asia and see for yourself. It's vibrant. This "vacation" is important for everyone.
English

@Michael38994161 @BarackObama @jamestalarico @GinaHinojosaTX Lol you have got to be joking. Obama is in Texas while Don is taking a family vacation to China...

It was great joining @JamesTalarico and @GinaHinojosaTX today in Texas. They're working hard to make a difference in the lives of all Texans, and will be able to do even more as your next Senator and Governor.
Let’s get it done, Texas!

NEW: Rep. Tim Burchett says former President Jimmy Carter cried when he was told information about UFOs and aliens.
"I don't think Trump knows. I mean, these people have kept this stuff secret..."
"When they told Jimmy Carter, he cried... You can go to the Carter Library and pull up that date... But they list the meeting and where he was when he got that brief."
