2023 Short Stories Read #30 “Born of Man and Woman” (1950) Richard Matheson. Skipping ahead so I’m prepped for the next episode of Elder Sign podcast w/ @glmcdorman and @bebudda, I read this very short, freaky story about a “kid” kept in a basement. Matheson’s first prof. sale.

2023 Short Stories Read #1 “The Summer Snow Storm” (1956) by Adam Chase In which a weatherman becomes The Weather Man, who causes weather to occur by his forecasts. An astounding, if implausible, adventure to rescue a damsel in distress behind the Iron Curtain follows. Very fun!

Somehow I have raised a three-year-old whose favorite game is pretending to be the eighteenth-century composer Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf.

@frryanwhitley @Buehlmeister Yes! You're the person I heard about it from! I'm so glad that we read it -- what a weird and unsettling apocalypse Buehlman envisions.

@StephenPiment I'm not sure what I said, but, yes. In fact, we regularly participate in the oldest continuously running con in the world, which had it's first meeting in 1936. We haven't done that since the Covid pandemic began, but I'm hoping to get back this fall.

@glmcdorman Minor point on GWLP #149: SF cons long predate Star Trek cons from the 1970's. The first Worldcon was held in 1939 and has been annual since then. Many cons were held throughout the 50's and 60's.

@bebudda @glmcdorman Listening to your coverage of Moore’s “In the Drownings” and parts of it remind me of Paul Kingsnorth’s amazing novel, THE WAKE. Are either of you familiar with that work? It’s def a project, but so, so worth it. Recommend.

@GuyRiessen Haha, yeah. My inside voice immediately started shouting "be careful with the pages" but then I realized that it's ultimately his book anyway ... this is just a few years earlier than I anticipated.

Yesterday my three-year-old saw me with the 5e Monster Manual and then wanted to read it with me. This morning when I went into his room to get him up, he didn't even say "good morning," just "go get the Monster Manual." It's going to be an awesome week.

@glmcdorman Yes the second half of "Last Days" is well worth reading, and possibly doing an episode on. Also the jerks on the other Wolfe cast got Evenson for an interview, you should ask him for one too!

@glmcdorman listening to the most recent Elder Sign Ep— yes Mothra is the most consistently “good” / “heroic” monster in that universe. She’s the “good guy” even more often than Godzilla is, but she’s generally an underdog.
