Each time someone tells someone something they must’ve heard a million times — Omg you’re tall — it reveals lack of theory of mind or selfishness: you feel discomfort at your surprise and instead of enduring you put it on this poor person who has to hear it for the 1000th time…

“member of the technical staff” has become its own hyper- status signifier . whatever pretension to humbleness in the original form is dead and buried . you should know that

Ten years in federal prison per offense and Piker committed multiples thereof, and on tape! Even if he's smart enough to plead down? He's going to be spending a lot of time in prison.

@moultano This is a crazy position to take on software specifically There are plenty of smart American kids who are unable to find a job Looks to me like importing cheap labor is distorting the market in a way that provides short term benefits and long term costs

People talk about this like there are software mines in the santa clara valley and you just need somebody to lift the shovels to dig it out. People's brains are the raw material that software is made of. It's only made here because the people who make it can immigrate here.

"All told, a remarkable two-thirds of the Valley’s nearly 400,000 tech jobs are now held by those born abroad, according to a 2025 report from the think tank Joint Venture Silicon Valley." realclearinvestigations.com/articles/2026/…

@MostlyMonkey @GayBearRes Assuming that includes transfers from parents I think a lot of kids either get rent money or their down payment paid for But, like, they’re still getting the money

@mitchellh @jasonshah Unfortunately it's always the big dependencies that we get hassled about, I'm not going to go write an http server though

@jasonshah That’s true for like… your OS or OpenSSL or something. But 99% of dependencies are something idiotic like a data structure or RGB color parser or something. Don’t update those if they work (esp if you’re already in a memory safe language)

Lamest thing about the "boomer whiners" is they never have a plan to expropriate and redistribute the boomer's assets. Their minds just blank at that point and they go back on an endless loop of emoting about how houses were 20K in 1980. OK, what are you actually going to DO?
