@nyunggai I"m sure people have aspirational goals still, but these are harder to achieve in this day and age. What I wonder is whether opening our economy to the world, free trade, & deregulating the banking system have played a part in our current economic situation.

100% right. My family & most Australians under Hawke/Keating, Howard/Costello were encouraged to be aspirational & we lifted ourselves out of poverty. We brought people on the journey with us. Now they are going to punish us & send the country into massive debt, it’s in that now & getting worst, which will take generations to pay off.
Martin Rogers 🇦🇺@martinfrogers

Australian budget today is all about the politics of envy. It’s a war on capital, innovation, aspiration & the Australian dream. It is this contrast: Americans hope you succeed, in case you take them with you. Australians hope you fail, for fear you’ll leave them behind.

@OsherFeldman I think it took guts for this government to announce those changes last night. No party these days wants to take wholesale new policies or major policy changes to an election. They will pay the price at next election if voters think they should. I don't think that will happen.

At least Shorten had the integrity and conviction to take these tax changes to the voters. The public rejected them at the ballot box. That’s how democracy is supposed to work. Shorten lost the election, but kept his integrity. Albanese won the election, but lost his integrity.

@BennyScarf It's not deserved at all. They are at least trying to come up with solutions to problems, that are 30 years in the making, perhaps longer. The alternative/s are not the answer. We do not need the Americanisation of our society. We do however need adjustment in some areas.

@PeterLawrence18 The handicap ratings are there for all to see. If people want to bet into something that is not assured of a start that's their problem. Respectfully, I disagree that the ratings system is the problem.

In recent years, there has been a significant rise in the number of heavily favoured runners failing to gain a start in feature races. We see it again this weekend in the 10,000. The rating system is obviously the problem, with out of form runners relying on OHR’s from an often distant past. Perhaps the solution is a new rule for all feature races where the race club reserves the right to choose the final two spots of each field?

@readswithravi Yes. "In The Skin Of The Lion" by Michael Ondaatje. It started my love affair with his magnificent books written over 30-35 years. I discovered his books about eight years ago.

@crosscourt1 In my early teens in the early 70's I played Tennis in Rockhampton. Mal was a regular at the annual Rockhampton Open and won it regularly. Bob & Trevor Laver were amongst his opponents. Vince Cheshire was Doubles partner and they won that often too. Sad to hear this news.

I am incredibly sad to hear of the passing of Aussie great Mal Anderson. One of tennis' legends. Mal was 91. Before his passing he was the 3rd oldest major champion after Frank Sedgeman & Ken Rosewall. During this year's Brisbane he was often sitting with Ken to watch matches

@LePapillonBlu2 I can. Obama inspired millions of non-voters to come out and vote. Regrettably, a lot of those same voters may not have voted at the last election, or, in the case of young black and Hispanic people they switched to Trump. "The Macho Factor" at play.

All I can say is that Superannuation has worked well for me I contributed over many years I am now retired and living off my superannuation I don't need an Aged Pension I know many people who have done the same
Miss Madeleine@MadsMelbourne

The NDIS, Superannuation and the CFMEU are the 3 biggest scams in Australia’s history. All of them created by the ALP and designed purely to steal the wealth from hard working Australians. The theft of our tax dollars is so great they have literally bankrupt the country. It’s about time this extortion racket comes to a stop!
