Good piece. I too have been a little baffled by the conversation around POTY which seems to pretty much admit that these awards are only for attackers and creators. It hasn't been a vintage year for attackers and creators across the league, logic dictates that that means it has been a really strong one for defenders and goalkeepers. I find it strange how readily and explicitly people suggest their contributions are lesser.

You hear people say it all the time- “that block/save is as good as a goal at the other end” The exact maths might not add up but the impact is huge and bigger than we give it credit for. If Raya doesn’t make that save, we probably lose.

@MBEdits7 @timstillman_ Very clearly not the case in a sport where wins are 3 pts, draws are 1 pt, and losses are 0 -- the save was very very important (obviously) but of course trossard goes down as the match winner because his goal won the match

@timstillman_ The save at 0-0 is as good as a goal at the other end, but Trossard comes away “the match-winner”. Just the semantics of it favour attackers.

There are always examples of great receivers who can ALSO block (Puka, ARSB, Kittle) but generally speaking – if your only reason for liking a player is that “his blocking ability will get him on the field” – you’re just drafting a block-first role player who doesn’t earn targets

Jaylen Warren was the RB19 in PPG (13.6) last year despite: - suffering a knee injury (WK3) - suffering an ankle sprain (WK11) - Kenneth Gainwell stealing 187 touches (73 receptions) & 8 TD’s Warren has exceeded Rico Dowdle’s best career Rushing Grade (74.4) in 2 of the last 3 seasons. & he’s a much better tackle-breaker (.276 vs .165 career MTF/attempt). Warren’s also a MUCH better receiver. He has posted a 70.0+ PFF Receiving Grade every year of his career (84.4 in 2025); Rico Dowdle has not cleared a 65.0 PFF Receiving Grade in 5 NFL seasons. Warren is also a MUCH better pass-blocker than Dowdle (70.7 vs 24.6 Pass-Blocking Grade in 2025). I expect Warren to be the more effective rusher AND handle the majority of the receiving work which Gainwell stole from him last year. & I’d argue he’s in a better position competing with Dowdle than Gainwell (a target is worth 2.5X as much as a carry in fantasy). Consider me “in” at a RB31 pricing in 2026.
