Panpsychsim - the idea that nature is mental or intellegent in some way - is a fundamental principle of Theurgy. Nature is alive, human consciousness evolves from elements at the quantum level which have a form of mental quality. This thought was lost with the rise of Christian monotheiam where god rules a dead nature, then ironically in 20th century radical evolutionism. The idea had became operative again beginning with the Renaissance on through Bruno, Spinoza, Leibniz, Shopenhauer, Fechner, Nietszche, Peirce and James. The past few years have seen its reappearance in the work of Russell, Nagel, Chalmers, Strawson, Hameroff, and others. How gratifying to see our tradition and thought take on life again, and metamorphose in so many extraordinary forms.
