@johnpavlovitz The federal government has no use of income. Even if it can convert foreign currency into USD, it has no use for it. If it collects existing USD without spending it into existence first, it takes it out of the economy. And that is a liquidity problem for the users of USD.

People still do not understand where this is heading. They assume wealth taxes only target billionaires. That is how every confiscatory system begins. Then thresholds decline over time because governments discover there are not enough billionaires to finance the welfare state.

@gogreen1908 @PhysInHistory If an animal kills another, we call it nature and put it nature channel. When we do it, it's wrong. Why? We're no different from our animal relation and survival of the fittest is what drives evolution. When did we become something different than the rest of the animals?

@PhilosophyOfPhy With all the computing power today, why isn't there ever a 3-D depiction of this bogus image? Curvature around a sphere should be radial with respect to the sphere's center, not a 2-D bent plane in one direction.

Einstein’s path to the discovery that mass warps spacetime began with a profound thought experiment in 1907, which he later called, the happiest thought of my life. It started with the question he asked to himself, "If a person falls freely from the roof of a house, will they feel their own weight?" When Einstein realized that a falling person would feel weightless. In their perspective, gravity would effectively disappear. This led to several game-changing realizations; First one is, The Equivalence Principle; He concluded that gravity and acceleration are essentially the same thing. If you were in a windowless elevator in deep space being pulled upward at a constant speed, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between that and standing still on Earth. Next one is, Gravity as Geometry: Because gravity affects everything exactly the same way regardless of mass, Einstein reasoned it isn't a "pulling force" like magnetism. Instead, it must be a property of the environment itself, which we know now as the fabric of spacetime. Last but not least, Warping Spacetime; If gravity is equivalent to acceleration, and acceleration can curve the path of light, then gravity must also curve light. The only way for light which always takes the shortest path to curve is if the ground it's traveling on spacetime which is itself curved by mass. For those just looking for fancy science fact it's just one of the discoveries about nature but Einstein himself it was the way of living life.

@richimedhurst The US becoming the major energy supplier to the world, repatriates the USD, as countries will be paying the US for energy instead of someone else. That does not support the US as an empire. An empire has its currency exported, not imported. Something else is going on.

@wgoggin In the case of QE by removing bonds from the private sector balance sheet and swapping for cash, the Fed terminates the future stream of interest payments that would have otherwise been injected into the private sector. That is a contractionary event for the future growth of M2

Yes, when government spends beyond tax revenues, and sells bonds to manage reserves, M2 automatically increases. But bond sales don’t “fund” or “finance” the budget or trade deficit. They accommodate domestic and foreign desires to save in dollar denominated assets.
Kalani o Māui@MauiBoyMacro

I’ve been seeing more comments here lately about “Stealth QE.” Let’s dispel some myths: Yes, M2 is rising, but no, the Fed is not doing QE. There are a few reasons why M2 is currently rising. 👇🏼 First, now that QT ended in December, the Fed is reinvesting MBS, Bills, Notes and Bonds back into Treasuries as they mature. They call this “Reserve Management Purchases” or RMPs. Second, the U.S. government has been borrowing heavily from foreigners via Treasury securities sales, with foreign holdings hitting records in 2025 and early 2026 (around $9.5 trillion). This inflow of foreign capital helps finance large deficits, and when the Treasury spends those funds domestically, it directly boosts bank deposits and other M2 components in the U.S. banking system. This adds net new dollars to the domestic system without reducing U.S. residents’ liquidity. It also helps fund the fiscal deficit (which itself expands M2 through spending) while supporting the U.S. current account deficit. Finally, the continuation of massive deficit spending increases M2 regardless of the buyer. The government borrowing/spending dynamic expands deposits either way. It’s true that domestic buyers have absorbed the majority of new issuance as the foreign share of total publicly held debt has actually declined slightly to 30%, but that’s because total debt is growing so fast.

@fiat_money To ask whether the US gov't has or does not have money is not an applicable question. The Gov't spends into existence what Congress has allocated in the budget, and taxes some of it back. The gov't does not need to get the money it spends or use the tax money returned.

@Science_TechTV Yes, but the caveat is that you have to use mathematics to describe reality, not fantasy. Ptolemy used mathematics to describe a geocentric solar system with its epicycles. It was mainstream scientific "fact" for 1400 years.

@PredicHistory Imported oil is only 15% of China's total energy consumption. So, if Russia can cover #0% of that, the rest can be easily covered. In fact, the US is willing to sell oil to China.

China is surrounded. US bases everywhere. Japan. Taiwan. Philippines. South Korea. Strait of Malacca — being militarized. Middle East — at war. Indian Ocean — blockaded. Western Hemisphere — American territory. Russia can cover maybe 30% of China's oil. Where does the rest come from? America. In US dollars. For the next 10 years — China has no choice. There is nothing they can do about it.

@wgoggin For example, Social Security payroll taxes go into the Social Security trust funds, which are an accounting construct rather than a genuine financial necessity for a sovereign currency issuer like the US government.

@gogreen1908 @jacksonhinklle Admitting currency isn't wealth is your own checkmate. If deficits just flood the system with empty signifiers, they don't create prosperity; they dilute it your 'currency base' isn't an economic foundation it's a parasitic ledger designed to siphon real material wealth

@gogreen1908 @jacksonhinklle If the deficit is just 'wealth' left in the economy, why does infinite spending dilute our purchasing power? And if taxes don't fund anything, why extract them at all? Because your metaphysical ledger must constantly cannibalize real material energy (inflation) to survive

@tairoquinho @jacksonhinklle Taxing in the government's currency forces people to provide work to provision the government by having to earn the currency which the government requires the tax to be paid in. That's how a government provisions itself. It doesn't need its own money back, it needs the work.

@thematrixb0t Yes, modern societies require class diversification. If we don't like it, then we can decide to go back to a rural agrarian society, except, the world found out that it's not feasible any more due to the world's population growth. China found this out and changed after Mao.

@tairoquinho @jacksonhinklle It's not serviced by future taxation. That's a common misconception. The money to pay taxes or for any other use, has initially been spent into the economy by the government. So, the government collects back part of the money it has spent into existence by taxing.

@gogreen1908 @jacksonhinklle debt "money" ignores that it's a liability bearing interest serviced by future taxation or inflation, currency issuer can always "pay" by printing, but that's default through debasement destroying purchasing power, it's just a confidence game that collapses when trust evaporate

@steve_hanke If the national debt went to zero, how much "base money" would be left in the economy to support credit money? None. There would be no US dollars without a national debt. The higher the national debt, the higher is the amount of dollars. Calling it debt is propaganda. It's money.
