Here's a cheat sheet made of charts on Tamil Nadu's prosperity march in the last 35 years. The state's dependence of agriculture decreased, its poverty declined, the mean years of schooling for girls increased and the per capita income galloped.

@JimPethokoukis Indian industry estimates for employment in the IT/BPO sector is 1% of the labour force. Even if the entire sector gets fired and move to the labour force, unemployment goes up by only 1 pp. I doubt if they are using the correct metric.

Interesting metric! 'We are monitoring the unemployment rate in the Philippines and India for any signs that AI is reducing the need for outsourced workers in corporate America. So far, there are no signs of AI replacing offshore workers.' apolloacademy.com/no-signs-of-ai…

@jjmaxwell4 @garrytan I doubt if anyone outside the top 10-15 percentile of the income distribution gets into IITs. Agree that once you are in that range, your relative position doesn’t help much.

@garrytan Would be interesting to look at India’s IIT admissions mapped to family income ranges and compare to the US. My understanding is admission is largely test score based. Imagine would be more merocratic across household income compared to US.

If you *only* used SAT to admit to elite colleges, share of admits from top 1% income falls 15.8% → 9.9% and representation from <$200k rises by +8.8%, with no reduction in post-college outcomes. It's 'holistic review' and 'ban SAT' policy that allows the most wealthy and powerful to virtue signal while getting an edge.

@BhattRohin @timesofindia Thanks for the article. Pedantic question. Why should incest be a separate category? Doesn’t rape cover the non-consensual cases? If consensual, don’t we need an equal treatment of all pregnancies?

@Noahpinion A typical Indian in this graph is a third/fourth generation elite. First gen: British college education-direct government job. Second gen: training in top IITs and migration to US. Third gen: ace SAT scores.

Wow, this is very kind @draparente, thank you! Honor to be in @SeyoneC's company. Fully agreed that the ability to "tinker with biology" (to quote a current hot topic 👀) using computational methods, open source datasets, etc. was hugely helpful in getting my feet wet with bio. I'll also add another force beyond personal passion that is, I think, is a prerequisite to doing good science early: exceptional mentorship. I'm sure this is what @SeyoneC received from you, and from personal experience, it was, and still is, a huge determinant of my own research quality. Particularly important if you want to get started on research young – to build good habits, learn how to ask the right questions, design experiments, falsify hypotheses, etc., all things I'm still learning. Mentorship doesn't always scale quickly (especially with ever-increasing funding constraints), so a few years ago, some friends and I (@benjamin0chang + @izzymgm) launched @openbio_lab at Harvard – a student-run bio community and biomakerspace to help underclassmen w/out access to prior research training get excited about and engaged with science. Similar idea behind @NucleateDojo and @thedojohouse – to help the “kids be better than ever before,” especially when research projects that OpenBio students pursue are impact-oriented. That said, IMHO, student science communities can complement but can't substitute dedicated expert mentorship.

@Ppl_not_profits What an obnoxious article. Gave it a read to see if the title was misleading. Not at all.

The partition of India, the culmination of British 'divide and rule' policy, was one of the bloodiest chapters in modern human history. With millions dead and injured, it caused mass insecurity, suspicion, chaos. The full scale of the destruction and the human cost is unfathomable. It is a scar the subcontinent has yet to recover from.

@gabriel_zucman How will it work? Countries already tax profits of the shareholders where it accrues. Do you mean taxing the share wealth proportionate to sales?

This speech is full of half-truths, distortions, misleading claims and outright lies. Basically living up to every meme, trope and unfair stereotype, of Americans being ignorant morons. I'll go through each of the claims he made in this segment and what the actual facts are. /1

@gokul_gr (3) I think it requires examining the recent nature of transmission mechanism from nominal exchange rate to prices. Only under adequately weak response of prices would a sharp nominal depreciation would lead to real depreciation.
