Human–elephant conflict in India demands urgent policy reform—~500 human deaths annually and 1,600+ elephants lost since 2009. Move beyond one-size-fits-all: invest in region-specific solutions, faster compensation, trained frontline staff, and community-led coexistence strategies. @moefcc @IBCA_official @ntca_india @rameshpandeyifs @GobindsagarBha1 @vrtiwari1 @SPYadavIFS @wii_india @bhlab_india @paragnigam09 @AnukulNath4

Gujarat sees a GIB chick after a decade, through a novel conservation measure - the jumpstart approach, coordinated by the Ministry, State Forest Departments of Rajasthan and Gujarat, and Wildlife Institute of India. Envisioned by PM Shri @narendramodi ji in 2011 to conserve GIB in its natural habitats including Gujrat, Project GIB was launched in 2016. As a result the number of birds in conservation breeding centres, started at Sam and Ramdevra in Rajasthan, have reached 73 with addition of 5 new chicks in this season and we are moving ahead towards rewilding of birds in near future. In achieving another milestone, a female GIB, tagged in August 2025, had laid an infertile egg in Kutch, as this population has lost all its males long back. In a major trans-state conservation effort, a captive-bred GIB egg from the conservation breeding program in Rajasthan was transported by road over 19 hours in a handheld portable incubator and was replaced in the nest on 22 March. The female completed incubating this fertile egg and hatched it on March 26. The field monitoring team found the young chick being reared by its foster mother. This effort is among one of the many steps to recover the critically endangered Great Indian Bustard populations. With the commitment to save GIB, we are making great progress in India’s conservation journey. Congratulations to all scientists, field officers and wildlife enthusiasts who made this possible. We are keeping our fingers crossed for the survival of the chick. At the same time we remain committed to leaving no stone unturned to make the endeavour successful. 🎥 The GIB takes a stroll with her chick.

The second session of the All India Tiger Estimation (AITE) Training Workshop 2026 at Pench Tiger Reserve was conducted by Dr. Bilal Habib, Nodal Officer, Tigercell NTCA. (@wildwithwolves) Dr. Habib shared valuable insights on tiger conservation and monitoring methods for AITE 2026. He discussed which species of cats are found and covered under the exercise, while also addressing critical issues in sampling such as species misidentification, confusion in pellets, cluster sampling, inadequate temporal replicates, off-hours data collection, and recording observations without a range finder. He emphasized that samples must represent all species, and highlighted the use of improved software and upgraded MSTrIPES to enhance accuracy and efficiency in monitoring. This session emphasized institutional collaboration, scientific rigour, and field preparedness as part of India’s largest wildlife survey. A highly informative session, paving the way for robust and precise methodologies in tiger estimation. Accurate data leads to effective protection. #TigerEstimation2026 #AITE2026 #TigerConservation #NTCA #WII_India #PenchTigerReserve

This is Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary (ABWLS) is a protected area with strictly regulated entry, accessible only via eco-friendly electric golf carts. The sanctuary is almost entirely fenced and equipped with camera systems used for wildlife monitoring and research. Several water holes have been developed throughout the sanctuary and are regularly replenished with fresh, potable water to support the resident wildlife. ABWLS hosts a rich diversity of flora and fauna, making it a vital biodiversity hotspot within the Capital. The area is gradually transforming into a thriving haven for wildlife, supporting a variety of species across different trophic levels of the food chain, including squirrels, deer, nilgai, monkeys, langurs, and leopards. Going forward, ABWLS will continue to be developed as a model eco-tourism hub, offering sustainable and educational nature-based experiences while prioritizing wildlife conservation and habitat protection.

A leopard in Delhi? Yes… and it’s not lost, it’s home. From wild cats to spotted deer, Delhi’s natural world is alive and protected. Under PM @narendramodi Ji’s vision and CM @gupta_rekha Ji’s leadership, we’re proving that a modern city can still make space for the wild. And we are not just witnessing this biodiversity… we are actively safeguarding it and taking care of it.
