You’re looking at one of the most magical landscapes on earth and chances are most people have never heard of it. These are the Shola “sky islands” of the Nilgiris. At first glance, it looks like a painting, but this landscape is alive in ways most people never realize. These 'cloud forests' locally known as "Cauliflower Shola", are living water systems. They capture drifting clouds, store rain deep within their soil, and release it slowly into rivers that sustain millions of lives. Swift action by the TN Forest Dept saved a female elephant that fell into a water tank in a tribal village in Coonoor,Nilgiris. The tank was broken open and the elephant safely returned to the forest. Kudos to DFO Ooty, Range Officer Coonoor & the entire team for the timely rescue. #wildliferescue #elephants #TNForest

A heartfelt welcome to 333 newly appointed Forest Guards and Forest Watchers who received their appointment orders from Minister Forest @RRajakannappan & Minister Finance,Climate Change & Forests @TThenarasu. Well trained guides are the backbone of the Trek Tamil Nadu initiative. We just completed refresher training for 52 guides from 17 trails of Trek TN with skills in safety, ecology, and visitor engagement, to ensure safer treks, richer experiences, and stronger conservation. This promotes responsible trekking preserving our pristine landscapes. A very heartening news is coming in just now about the successful rescue and reunion of a juvenile elephant in Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu Foresters in Gudalur Forest Division in Nilgiris have successfully rescued a juvenile elephant from a 30 feet deep sand well in a farmland where the young elephant had accidentally fallen.After 8 hours of challenging battle the team succeeded in making a ramp for the elephant to safely walk out of the well. After the rescue the team united the baby elephant with her mother who patiently waited nearby with the herd. Big appreciation to DFO Gudalur, Vengatesh Prabhu who led the operation with a team of 40 people from 3 am onwards #TNForest #wildliferescue #elephants

Today is a memorable day in our conservation journey as we celebrate the first ever 'Nilgiri Tahr Day' a day dedicated to the State animal of Tamil Nadu. This day is being celebrated in honour of D.r E.R.C. Davidar whose Birthday falls on this day. Dr. Davidar pioneered one of the first studies on Nilgiri Tahr in 1975. We have released a Poster on this occassion. Localy known as "Varaiaadu" the "Nilgiri Tahr" is an endangered species. Found at elevations between 300 m and 2,600 m above sea level, the Nilgiri Tahr inhabits meadows with steep cliffs. It is estimated that there are 3,122 "Nilgiri Tahrs" in the wild. Historically, Nilgiri Tahr was known to inhabit a large portion of the Western Ghats, but today it remains restricted to a small area.
