A dreich but very interesting day in Skye last week: lots of fascinating stories about land resistance and engaging talks about how past land struggles can inform our present thinking of justice in relation land, language, and culture.

#Gaelic should be visible in Scottish academia. In this week’s @sgsah blog post, Ceit Langhorne from @SabhalMorOstaig invites us to the world of her thesis, entirely written in Gaelic, and Scotland’s heroic tales:

Imagine CHOOSING to lock the doors of a hospital capable of providing 24/7 urgent care that is a one minute walk away from a music festival with thousands of people attending.
Portree is one of the busiest places in summer with Scottish tourism and urgent care is what should be expected of anyone visiting here or living here.
Skye is not some small wee island where everything is a stones throw away or a 5 minute drive.
Anyone with a medical emergency in the most northerly point of Skye is 1 hour 30 mins away from the closest “functioning” hospital.
Factor in a return time if they would require an ambulance.
6 years now this has been going on.
OPEN PORTREE HOSPITAL FOR 24/7 URGENT CARE
The community of Skye and visitors to this island deserve better!

Today marks the anniversary of the bloody clash that ensued on the 19th of April 1882 which became known as The Battle of The Braes and played a vital role in land reform in Scotland in the following decades. Check out our online exhibition for more:

The Duncan MacPherson collection is always a joy
Highland Archives@HLHArchives
Our @HighlandHistory offers a huge range of online #SoundandVision . Including one of our favourite photographic collection Duncan MacPherson. Here is a sample of some film we had conserved & digitised, could this be the first camper van coming to Skye?😉 #Archive30 @ARAScot
