@minkrov @Anaya_sharma876 @Steam @TimSweeneyEpic @Apple Curiously, if you include console gaming, the numbers change MASSIVELY... I can't remember what the numbers were, but it was MASSIVELY in favor of online gaming if you include consoles. But for PC gaming, it's *roughly* about the same with online gaming only *slightly* ahead.

@greg_opera @Anaya_sharma876 @Steam @TimSweeneyEpic @Apple I was talking about active / concurrent player counts, not preference polls. For actual Steam concurrent players at peak times it's still ~80-90%+ in multiplayer games, exactly as I said earlier. The 55/45 split you posted is much closer to preference, not real-time active users

Genuine question: If Linux is so good… why do most people still use Windows?

@minkrov @Anaya_sharma876 @Steam @TimSweeneyEpic @Apple No, I looked that up with a couple of AI assistants - ChatGPT, Grok and Copilot - before I posted it. Obviously the figures vary from time-to-time and like with most things in the computer world, there's limited data to track it accurately... It's an estimate.

@minkrov @Anaya_sharma876 @Steam @TimSweeneyEpic @Apple The numbers change slightly if you consider active players, but it's not as big of a difference as you make it out to be... Approximately 55% versus approximately 45%, in favor of online gaming (consoles are roughly 50% each). Revenue is a BIG difference, but numbers aren't.

@minkrov @Anaya_sharma876 @Steam @TimSweeneyEpic @Apple I just looked it up - you're wrong, though the numbers are a LOT closer than *I* would have thought; so there's that, too. *Approximately* 56% prefer single-player games versus *approximately* 44% prefer online games. Note that for relevance, this is for *PC gaming* only.

@greg_opera @Anaya_sharma876 @Steam @TimSweeneyEpic @Apple Online multiplayer games account for the majority of active users and engagement in the gaming industry. Single player games have a long lifetime ownership and dedicated communities. That's what I meant by "most games", because most player count (I'm sorry for my phrasing...😭)

@xMBGx I'll be skipping the next generation. Between the Nintendo Switch and the PlayStation 5, the Ninth Generation of consoles has been one big disappointment with regard to releases - and it's been openly anti-consumer. The @Steam Deck (@OnDeck) has done more for gaming and gamers.

The PS6 and Xbox Helix are expected to release Holiday 2027. Based on what we know right now, which one are you more likely to buy? Or will you be skipping next-gen altogether?

@minkrov @Anaya_sharma876 @Steam @TimSweeneyEpic @Apple Firstly, online multiplayer games make up a small portion of the overall gaming industry. Secondly, most anti-cheat systems *natively* support Linux - but developers often blacklist Linux because they are either anti-Linux or they are lazy.

@SakshiSugandhi @noor36758 That's a joke, right? My work laptop runs @Windows, and I want to throw it because it's difficult to use and much of the workflow makes no logical sense... The ONLY thing it does well is it handles my four screens with ease. @Apple #macOS and #Linux are WAAAY easier to use.

Well it's taken most of the day, but I *finally* got a working copy of @kde_neon installed on my @ASUS #ZenBook Duo... And my first impressions are that it is nice. It looks pretty, and seems to work well with dual screens; but it *is* a lot harder to see with my old eyes. 🤣

I'm an intermediate Linux user & I have been using it exclusively for close to 20 years. Yet I just spent ~2 hours in Terminal working to get @KdeNeon "clean" installed on my @ASUS #ZenBook Duo. I sorted it - but Linux still has a LONG way to go to be ready for Everyday Users.

@minkrov @Anaya_sharma876 @Steam @TimSweeneyEpic @Apple And whilst you're right about @Apple having no interest in gaming, which is a missed opportunity in my opinion, you're conveniently ignoring the fact that the overwhelming majority of games actually under Linux these days... Almost all of them in fact.

@greg_opera @Anaya_sharma876 @Steam @TimSweeneyEpic @Apple Yeah that's all mostly true, but Apple still has a bigger market share than Linux (around 8%+). But macOS also isn't really supported for gaming either 😭 so windows will probably stay the most dominant in gaming for a whole while longer over macOS and Linux.

@greg_opera @Anaya_sharma876 @Steam I've done some research and yeah you're right, Nevertheless they don't do it cause they hate Linux, they just don't bother enabling the Anti-Cheats. Linux has a tiny player base (2-3% of steam users), and cheating is simpler to develop inside of linux, and it's just more work.

@minkrov @Anaya_sharma876 @Steam As for developers being anti-Linux, I suggest you take a look at @TimSweeneyEpic’s comments… And he’s far from the only one (though he is the most prominent example). If they’re not anti-Linux, it’s usually a case of laziness.

@greg_opera @Anaya_sharma876 @Steam I don't think that's true to be honest, why would they be anti-Linux anyways. It's more logical to think that Linux has some systems in place that automatically flag some stuff inside of games
