My PhD thesis "Quantum State and Unitary Complexity" is out: cs.toronto.edu/~rosenthal/the…. Three reasons to look at it even if you're already familiar with my papers:

@captgouda24 One way you know it's not like philosophy is there's never been a Sokal affair for math.

Folks, obscurity is not a virtue. It may be inevitable, it may be necessary, but it is not a virtue. This is getting a lot of replies rejecting the notion that we should try to help people understand things. It's like philosophers -- they have mistaken obscurity for profundity.
Nicholas Decker@captgouda24

@dimschko No, it needn’t. Things should be arranged pyramidically, starting with motivation, then a broad verbal description of what we are doing, then attacking the problem with increasing formality, then connecting it to other problem in the literature. This is how econ does it.

@PensareBBall My basketball IQ isn’y high enough to see the problem with this shot. Open 3 while two Nets players are in the paint seems fine?

@PensareBBall Quickley needed to move to the corner so Ingram would have a clear pass to Scottie.

@PensareBBall I wonder why Darko doesn’t replace RJ in the starting lineup with a three point shooter like Ja'Kobe or Gradey (while still playing RJ starters’ minutes). Is it just because preseason is the best time to experiment?

@robbensinger At least in setups I’ve seen, in Prisoner’s Dilemma you screw over another person by defecting, whereas in Newcomb’s paradox the boxes just sort of materialize out of nowhere.

It's funny how everyone thinks of the Prisoner's Dilemma as "bog-standard dilemma, you're a dick if you defect" and thinks of Newcomb's Problem as "insane paradox, one-boxing is crazy", even though they're literally the exact same problem and two-boxing is identical to defecting.

If Collin Murray-Boyles ever figures out how to shoot consistently he's a top 4 pick in every 2025 redraft. I'm assuming the Raptors are banking on this outcome as a matter of if, not when.

@PensareBBall And I expect they’ll be even better in future years, with their youth and draft picks. I worry that the Thunder might single-handedly prevent the Raptors from winning a championship in Scottie’s prime.

@esrtweet @PstafarianPrice I’ve tried and failed to enjoy cooking for myself, and I’ve lived my adult life in small studio apartments with little room for guests. So as with any other good or service in a capitalist economy, I’m happy to pay someone with a comparative advantage in cooking to do it for me.

@PstafarianPrice This mystifies me. Cooking for my friends and family is a pleasure. Why people would give this up to entirely eat food cooked by strangers, I just don't understand at all.

We're culturally falling out of the habit of cooking food for friends, family, neighbors in unfortunate situations because food delivery exists but the insane prices of it make it MORE NECESSARY THAN EVER
Chris McCallister@virtuous_rogue1

@PstafarianPrice I pulled my back last weekend and was hardly able to move. I figured this would make it morally acceptable to have food delivered. I ordered from a place a block away and between delivery fee, credit card fee, taxes, tip, etc. it was $48. Next time I'll just crawl somewhere.

something I’ve never quite fully understood is why Bernie is nationally much more popular than any of his fellow ideological travelers. AOC, Omar, Warren, etc all poll pretty terribly. I have guesses but no solid answer

@SarahTheHaider Adding tomboys to male-only groups never changed the vibe when I was a kid, except for conversations about sexuality at a certain age. Out of curiosity I looked at the replies to see what specifically I’m overlooking, and was disappointed that no one even tried to explain this.

@razibkhan I think people who self-select into pure math rather than physics tend to be less interested in the external world to begin with (and more generally, less interested in problems that aren’t precisely defined).

@Anthrofuentes No sympathy. Anybody with "social justice" in their pitch deserves to be permanently defunded, living under a bridge, and thanking their luck that they weren't thrown out of a helicopter.

My colleagues and I are on the hit list for having "social justice" in our project-a successful project supported by a professional organization & used as a model by others. Scientists must work together to push back & Institutions must support them commerce.senate.gov/2025/2/cruz-le…
