The President of the United States just declared the Supreme Leader of Iran dead. “Khamenei, one of the most evil people in History, is dead.” Posted on Truth Social. Confirmed by the White House account. An Israeli official told Reuters the body was found in his Tehran compound. Trump told NBC News that “most” Iranian decision-makers are gone. This is the President of the United States, in the middle of an active military operation he authorized from Mar-a-Lago, announcing to the world that a man who ruled Iran for 35 years, who survived eight American presidents, who built the nuclear program, who funded every proxy from Beirut to Sanaa, is dead. Iran denied it within the hour. Foreign Minister Araghchi said Khamenei is “safe and sound.” Tasnim and Mehr news agencies reported he is “steadfast and firm in commanding the field.” And then nothing. No video. No photograph. No live broadcast. No proof of life of any kind from a regime that controls every camera, every studio, every broadcast tower in the country. A regime that could end every question on earth with thirty seconds of footage has instead chosen to issue text statements through a Foreign Minister who 24 hours ago said “still alive as far as I know.” Here is what happens if Trump is right. Iran’s Constitution assigns succession to the Assembly of Experts, 88 clerics who select the Supreme Leader for life. There has been exactly one succession in the history of the Islamic Republic: Khomeini to Khamenei in 1989, resolved in weeks through a constitutional amendment because Khamenei did not meet the religious qualifications. There is no precedent for a wartime succession under active bombardment with the IRGC’s command structure simultaneously degraded. A senior Arab diplomat told the Times of Israel that Tehran had prepared detailed succession plans elevating Ali Larijani to manage the crisis. Forbes reports Khamenei pre-designated three clerics as potential successors. Multiple analysts confirm four layers of succession built into every critical role. Iran designed a machine to outlive any single man. But the machine was designed to function in peacetime. Not while F-22s are overhead. Not while carrier strike groups bracket the country. Not while the IRGC commander, the defense minister, and the head of the Supreme National Security Council are assessed killed in the same strike. The Assembly of Experts cannot convene when the building they convene in is a target. The succession layers do not work when every layer above has been struck simultaneously. Iran built four layers of continuity. The strikes hit all four on the same morning. The regime that survived revolution, survived eight years of war with Iraq, survived Stuxnet, survived sanctions, survived 2022 protests, now faces the one scenario it cannot engineer its way out of: a succession crisis during a decapitation campaign with no ceasefire in sight. Khamenei ruled for 35 years. The question of who rules next may not survive the next 35 hours. open.substack.com/pub/shanakaans…
