There has long been a perception shared by many Conservatives that much of Ottawa’s media establishment is more skeptical of Conservatives than of other parties. That’s not a new debate, and Robert Fife is far from the first to acknowledge it. But there is an important point that often gets overlooked. Today’s political landscape is fundamentally different from what it was even 20 years ago, let alone 50. Political parties no longer depend exclusively on traditional media to reach Canadians. Social media, podcasts, digital platforms, email, text messaging, and direct voter engagement have dramatically expanded the ways leaders can communicate their message without relying on the gatekeepers of old. At the same time, the traditional media establishment has far fewer tools and far less influence than it once did. Its ability to shape the political narrative is not what it was at the beginning of this century, and certainly not what it was in the last century. If anything, it should be easier today to connect directly with Canadians than it was for previous generations of Conservative leaders. Brian Mulroney won two consecutive majority governments, including the largest parliamentary majorities in Canadian history. Stephen Harper won three consecutive elections and formed a majority government. They certainly faced media criticism, yet they built broad coalitions and earned the confidence of Canadians. Media bias, whether real or perceived, may be part of the political environment. But it cannot become the explanation for electoral outcomes. Successful political movements adapt, communicate effectively, and persuade Canadians despite the obstacles in their path. The objective of politics isn’t to win the argument with the media. It’s to win the confidence of Canadians.

Political journalist Robert Fife tells @Aaronpete_ that Ottawa's media is biased against Conservatives. "You may be right in the sense that there's an unfair bias against the Conservatives in Ottawa... That's probably true and it's always been the case."
