Too many wingers that are actually not that good. Estevão can play in the half-space. Neto can be a WB. Gittens can become a WB. Even if Xabi doesn't use three at the back, Garnacho will still be on the bench. Apart from wingers, the main optics of the team are more suited to a three at the back system.

Personally, I don't think Alonso is going to use a back three. We've got too many wingers (Garnacho/Gittens/Estevao/Neto). Need at least one to hold the width. My prediction is that Alonso will use a similar system to Maresca, except that he might try to instill more directness to our offensive play, which will suit the wingers. That will require more physicality in midfield. So, I see Chelsea upgrading there after selling Lavia perhaps rather than at wingback/fullback. If we don't have any injuries, I'd also think that Chelsea will become more fluid in possession.

Xabi Alonso said he looks most at football intelligence when signing a player. Namechecked Grimaldo as an example, his intuition and IQ for many roles. Don't think he will like Cucurella at Chelsea, someone who is a limited footballer.

The greatest strength in Chelsea’s squad is their technical level. Reece, Hato Colwill, Caicedo, Enzo, Palmer - these are all players who suit playing a possession-based approach that dominates the ball and looks to build up methodically. You could not ask for a better coach to maximise these profiles than Alonso. However, the players Alonso identifies (with the recruitment power he’s been given) and who Chelsea’s hierarchy can do deals for (smart fund allocation) is the key, given the many holes they have in the squad. Particularly in terms of A) midfield defensive balance and B) forming a complementary attack with game-changers which is where they failed once again in the FA Cup final. That is what will make or break Alonso’s Chelsea reign and this last attempt to save the Clearlake era from disaster.

The interesting thing when you discuss formation is that people who loved Maresca's work will tell you they don't want a back 3. I ask, what did Maresca use at Chelsea? Maresca's shape in possession was 3-2-4-1, out of possession 4-5-1. Alonso's shape in possession at Leverkusen was 3-2-4-1, and out of possession 4-5-1. 😂 That's why formation on paper is BS.

This squad really suits Alonso's 3-2-4-1. Too many CBs that fit a back three: Hato, Fofana, Acheampong. Wingers that prefer half-space, like Palmer and Estevão. Enzo can also play in half-space. Wingers that can operate as WBs, like Neto and Quenda. Reece, Gusto, and Cucurella can also do it. I will be surprised if he decides to use a back four. Don't forget that his back three is very dynamic, and the average positions look like a back four because he adjusts the movements of the WBs. One defends high, the other defends low out of possession.
