@timmckay52 This is a great perspective. We tend to have a recency bias with drama, but the 'scorched earth' era of the writing community was truly exhausting. Seeing people trade the mob mentality for the mute button is a win for everyone’s mental health.

Say what you will about all the author drama lately, I'll take this over what it used to be. I can mute petty arguments. I do wish we saw fewer of them. But I'll take somewhat juvenile squabbles over weekly mobs and review bombing. Used to be we'd see entire cliques of self-righteous authors try to overtly destroy another's career for *anything*. Complain about querying challenges? DONE. Complain about bad indie covers? DONE. Complain about a bad review? DONE. Complain about mobs? TRIPLE DONE. (Not me. I'm still kicking despite a few troublemakers' best efforts 😉 but I saw one author absolutely wrecked for standing up to it all.) Granted, the inciting posts were often less than tactful (and ffs, don't respond to bad reviews, people), but none of these things deserved social obliteration (let alone destroyed careers or future prospects). Just let be and show people a better way. All that to say, I'm actually hopeful. Seems to me the trend is upward, more than people realize. You just have to step back to see it.

@societyhatestee The plot stays the same, but the protagonist changes from 'hero' to 'questionable' real quick once you hit your 30s. Which book did a total 180 for you on the second or third read?

i believe you should always re-read your favorite books at different stages of your life. The plot never changes but your perspective does.

"Think not of the books you’ve bought as a “to be read” pile. Instead, think of your bookcase as a wine cellar. You collect books to be read at the right time, the right place, and the right mood." –Luc van Donkersgoed

@bannon1975 We often write into the void for so long that we forget the void eventually starts listening. Seeing where you started is the ultimate proof that 'luck' is just the residue of showing up every single day.

If you write for children, visit schools whenever you can. Not to sell books. To remember who you're writing for. Fifteen minutes with a class of 9 year olds will fix your pacing, sharpen your dialogue and remind you exactly why every word matters.

@startingfromnix Creativity is a muscle, not a lightning bolt. If you show up at the same time every day, the muse eventually learns your schedule and starts showing up too. Great reminder.

Notes on cultivating a writing practice - rigor and discipline apply to creative work too! Show up and the muse shows up.

@Ravenismeee I don't need an audience; I’m just here to leave a digital trail for future historians to realize how weird I was.

@TheScribblerCMB My heart rate definitely spikes during the third-act plot twist. That has to count for something, right?

careers i've considered but am sadly unqualified for: 1. phantom of the opera (can't sing opera) 2. headless horseman (still have my head) 3. dracula (don't own a castle) 4. frakenstein (terrible at science) 5. werewolf (not a big meat eater)

At 100 followers: "I'm too small" At 500 followers: "I'm not ready" At 1,000 followers: "Next month" Then I realized: The perfect moment doesn't exist. You create it by starting now.

@Elenalune_ The first step is admitting you have a problem. The second step is buying a new bookshelf so you can fit more 'problems' in the living room.

@SweetNovember48 The best part is when those made-up people start arguing with you and refusing to follow the outline you gave them. It really is a job where you're both the boss and the person being held hostage by their own imagination.

Writing is wild. You sit down with nothing, make up people who don’t exist, give them problems you created, and then spend hours solving them like it’s your job. And somehow… it works. One sentence turns into a page, a page turns into a story, and suddenly you’ve built something out of thin air. It’s chaotic, it’s exhausting, and honestly… I love it.

Have you read at least 3 good copywriting books? Looking for more? Well, Don’t. Start writing. More reading only crams knowledge, which then becomes dormant. Dormant knowledge is worthless. Applied knowledge is priceless. The purpose of knowledge is action. Take action.

@serenaded_ Spot on. We don't learn by consuming; we learn by failing and adjusting. You’ll learn more from one failed ad campaign than from ten books on how to write a perfect one. Applied knowledge is the only kind that pays the bills.

@nicholewinterss This is exactly the right energy. Having pros in the industry spend hours of their lives immersed in your world is a massive win in itself. Enjoy the moment!
