@JulieChangRE Portland leather bags are great quality if you don’t care about labels. Real leather and look brand new a year after I bought them.

@life0fStacy13 It’s totally traumatizing! It’s why I became a birth doula. I’m sorry you had to deal with all that, reading what you said was so relatable for me.

@halfwrittensong I was at UCLA for 7 months waiting for a heart transplant. The year before I was in every month for 3-21 days to get fluid off of me. It’s really hard to get over the noises and chaos of hospitals. I’m sorry you had to go that. It’s not fun!

I think I’ve tried 5 different psychiatrists since transplant, one being a transplant psychiatrist who told me “you need to walk more” at the time I hadn’t slept in a week and if anyone opened a door I would jump and my HR would go to the 160’s to 170’s. In the hospital your door opens and closes all day and night and all you hear on the cardiac floor is beeps and codes going off. When I came home the PTSD was so bad. The girls couldn’t even play video games around me because any beeping noise would send me into a panic attack. My monitors constantly went off when I was in the hospital. When I would walk my monitor would go off and a nurse would come running with a wheelchair. My mom would not leave me alone and would open and shut my door all day long and she could not understand why I can not stand my door being opened and closed. I would end up yelling at her to please leave me alone and then she would cry an say “I’m just checking on you!” And every fucking psych doctor would tell me “go for a walk!” I am allergic to a lot of psych meds and I can’t take a lot of sleeping meds because they cause psychosis and these damn drs would tell me “you should try again” or “go for any walk. It’s good to get fresh air!” I hate these online psych appointments.

@9mmballpoint @KelseyTuoc I had a full time job when I was 14. Not letting a 13 year old go to movies is nuts. Kids need to learn to solve their own problems and be out in the world, this is how you help them learn - giving them opportunities to practice.

To give you a sense of how quickly the parenting world has gone insane, I'm a Millennial and my friends and I all worked as babysitters when we were like 12
elizabeth@cobavines

@HighHeelEsquire She is THIRTEEN. If she was 16 or 17, yes this would be crazy overbearing. What are they doing at just 13 they don’t want the mom to see? She’s too young to be totally unsupervised. I don’t think this is too much at all. They’re babies.

@TrungTPhan I know of another company that did something similar, one of the employees was seriously injured on a motorcycle during the trip, more insane shenanigans like this trip but smaller scale. More common than you think in the startup world!

Streaming tech firm Plex held "Survivor"-themed corporate retreat for 120 full-remote staff in Honduras for $500k in 2017. Could have been episode of "The Office": ◽️ hotel GM resigns 3 weeks before and says "I wish you the best with your retreat" ◽️ hotel head chef quits 3 days later ◽️ road to resort un-paved and towers with machine-gun toting guards en route ◽️food is crap and warned not to eat salad...Plex CEO wants veggies and eats salad, gets E.Coli on first day ◽️ Navy seal brought to run team through drills and it's a disaster because he'd never seen "such an unfit group" ◽️replacement chef had never served 100+ people and all chicken and beef comes out raw ◽️ resort fumigated every day to get rid of sand fleas ◽️ took 100+ employees to a remote island...~20 people stranded over night because 8-person propeller plane couldn't fly everyone back before dark (no light on runway on island) A lot of people from trip still at company and Plex CEO Keith Valory says, "You get really close bonds on these trips. It’s like the life-sustaining force of the company." $500,000!!!!!

@SunShakSunday couple dozen operators when I worked at a real estate debt platform and they all said getting equity capital was their biggest problem. not debt financing. But HML is not a well served market and the borrowers are less sophisticated with smaller track records so better deals

@Daily_MailUS @AmeshiaCross I see a lot of low IQ people blaming Democrats for this. Here’s a reminder that Republicans control all 3 branches of the government, and that the GOP has blocked bills Democrats have introduced to fund TSA and end the shutdown TEN TIMES.
Democrats@TheDemocrats

Democrats introduced bills to end the TSA shutdown on: March 5 March 11 March 12 March 18 March 19 (x2) March 21 March 23 Republicans blocked TSA funding every single time.

$33.1M opening day with zero green screens. Read that again. Project Hail Mary cost $200 million to make. Lord and Miller built the entire Hail Mary spacecraft as a practical set. Thousands of physical buttons, hundreds of real screens, a hatch modeled after ISS designs. The alien, Rocky, is a full animatronic puppet designed by Neal Scanlan, the creature shop legend behind the best Star Wars practical work. Ryan Gosling acted against a real puppet in every single scene. The movie has 2,018 VFX shots. That sounds like a lot until you compare it to Avatar: Fire and Ash, which ran over 3,500. The difference: Avatar builds the world digitally and asks the audience to believe it. Project Hail Mary builds the world physically and uses VFX to clean up wires, remove puppeteers, and paint in space backgrounds. One approach creates spectacle. The other creates presence. This is a $200 million bet against the last 15 years of Hollywood production logic. After Avengers: Endgame, the industry standardized around green screen stages and digital environments because it was faster and cheaper per shot. Studios could reshoot entire sequences in post. The tradeoff was invisible until it wasn't: audiences started describing blockbusters as looking like "video games." Snow White's $42M opening. The Marvels at $46M. Quantumania. Ant-Man built on a soundstage that looked like it. Lord and Miller went the opposite direction and spent more money on physical construction than most studios spend on entire VFX pipelines. Greig Fraser, the cinematographer who shot Dune, lit the Hail Mary with practical lights so the camera could move freely through real corridors. When Gosling floats in zero-g, that's wire work, not simulation. When he touches a panel, it's a real panel. Guillermo del Toro saw the film and called the commitment to practical sets and puppets "a goal, an aspiration, and a commitment. Especially now." The "especially now" is doing all the work in that sentence. He's talking about an industry where the default response to a $200M budget is to minimize physical production and maximize digital flexibility. Project Hail Mary did the opposite and just posted the biggest non-franchise opening day in domestic box office history. The audience can tell. They've always been able to tell.

@Romy_Holland I’m not sure I agree with this take entirely in NYC specifically. Berkeley yes, but in NYC we have a ton of flooding problems and people have died during nor’easters/hurricane weather. Basement apartments are a problem when flooding is a major climate concern.

relaxing the standards for ADUs would be one of the most effective policy changes in this direction. things like 7’ ceilings and a mandate to be at least half above ground unnecessarily outlaw basement units in a ton of existing buildings for no good reason. ppl just don’t like the idea of poor people living in basements and so they legislate away their right to do so.
Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani@NYCMayor

If you own a home with a basement, attic, or backyard, chances are you’ve thought about using it to earn a little extra income or as space for a loved one. We want to make it as easy (and affordable) as possible for you to do that. NYC recently legalized ADUs — but for too many New Yorkers, they’re still tied up in bureaucracy and expense. We're fixing that. Our new toolkit at nyc.gov/aduforyou includes preapproved building plans and a financing calculator so you can get right to building. If we want New York to remain a city for everyone, we have to make it easier for homeowners to stay here. ADU for You will do just that.

Before ----> After What we did: (last one is most fun!) - better lighting - carry cabs up to ceiling (no more dust bunny shelf) - walnut soffit gives visual continuity and place for lighting - flat front grain matched walnut cabs - easier to clean, less visual cluttet - full backsplash (4" turn up looks cheap/low effort) - 6" German oak floors instead of cheap vinyl - larger window - in corner since that's the least useful spot for uppers, and that's where the view is - sink centered on window pane not window mullion - no microwave vent hood (they don't work well, they're ugly, and they are hard for shorter people to use) - added island seating with prep sink - intentional alignments, rigorous attention to spacing and sizing - 38" high counters - these homeowners are both tall!
