Tanzania steps up efforts to establish Emergency Medical Teams for preparedness & response. The training and induction of over 40 members have been officially outdoored . A big step in strengthening rapid, life-saving action when it matters most. @Pandemic_Fund

I was honoured to participate in the inauguration of the Kwimba Maternal and Newborn Care Unit in Mwanza Region, #Tanzania. It was a powerful demonstration of leadership, partnership and community commitment. I commend the government for advancing global resolutions and contributing evidence to @WHO guidelines that shape collective efforts to improve maternal, newborn and child health.

Excellent discussion today with Dr @mimi_darko, DG of @AU_AMA_, on the sidelines of the #AUSummit, to advance a WHO–AMA Framework of Collaboration and joint operational plan and strengthen post-marketing surveillance against substandard and falsified medical products. I reaffirmed WHO’s commitment to supporting AMA’s operationalization as the continental anchor for harmonized medical products regulation and ensuring every African has access to safe, quality medicines.

Congratulations to Australia and Indonesia on achieving @WHO’s highest international standards in medical products regulation, becoming WHO Listed Authorities (WLAs). With their addition, the global WLA network now comprises 41 authorities from 39 countries. As the WLA network becomes more geographically diverse, it strengthens global and regional collaboration for equitable and timely access to safe, effective and quality-assured health products for everyone, especially during health emergencies. who.int/news/item/21-1…

I am honored to receive the African Unity Nelson Mandela Award, which I accept on behalf of my @WHO colleagues working in #Africa and around the world to help people reach the highest attainable standard of health as a fundamental human right.  I also congratulate fellow 2025 honorees @MaEllenSirleaf, Nobel Peace Laureate and #Liberia's first female president; US political, diplomatic and civil rights leader @AmbAndrewYoung; and former American ambassador and US Institute of Peace special envoy Johnnie Carson for their richly deserved recognitions. I am humbled to be recognized alongside these giants of international collaboration, human rights and advancing the prospects of #Africa.

A pleasure meeting with Dr Delese Mimi Darko, the inaugural Director General of the African Medicines Agency (AMA), on her first visit to @WHO headquarters in her new role. We discussed strengthening collaboration to increase access to medicines across the African continent, including advancing support to ratify the AMA Treaty by more @_AfricanUnion member states, providing financial and technical assistance to the agency to set up its regulatory systems and procedures, and through our co-hosting of the 11th African Regulators Conference in late 2026.

A pleasure to meet in #Switzerland’s capital, Bern, with Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider. We discussed the progress of @WHO’s restructuring and prioritization on its core work to protect and promote public health, negotiations on the Pandemic Agreement Pathogen Access and Benefit Sharing (PABS) system, and preparations for the WHO Executive Board meeting in January. We agreed on the importance of the strong Swiss-WHO partnership, and the pivotal role of Geneva as the global health capital.

I was honoured to deliver the annual Dag Hammarskjöld Lecture in memory of a truly extraordinary leader and champion of multilateralism and peace. It was a sincere privilege to come to Dag Hammarskjöld's home city of Uppsala and recognize his great legacy as a global statesman, humanitarian and the immensely influential and respected second @UN Secretary-General. I thank the Hammarskjöld Foundation and Uppsala University for the very personal and meaningful opportunity to engage with so many people, of all ages, who demonstrated great passion and understanding for addressing the urgent challenges the world faces today. Today, with my brother @Dr_JeanKaseya, DG of Africa CDC, we signed the Framework of Collaboration between @WHO & @AfricaCDC. This important milestone builds on our joint experiences in responding to health emergencies in #Africa and recognises that no single institution can meet the health challenges of our continent alone. The Framework brings clarity to our respective roles and coherence to our collective action in supporting countries to advance health security across Africa. Together for #HealthForAll!
