Here’s what’s going on: Costs are at an all-time high, including base food, so margins are reduced even more. Lower-end consumers are stretched, leading to fewer visits. You can either enter the discount game with even lower margins to gain market share, or do nothing, lose market share, and hope you can make your note payments. With so many restaurants closing or declaring bankruptcy, we may be in the middle of a restaurant recession. This is the kind of environment @McDonalds plays well in, especially with competitors closing. I’ve had multiple locations shut down around me, and it’s been the biggest boost to comp sales beyond expectations.

This is absolutely insane: Prior to the Iran war, US oil companies were generating ~$62 billion in annual free cash flow with oil prices at $55/barrel. Now, with oil prices at $100/barrel, US oil companies are expected to generate $163 billion in annual free cash flow, if current prices are sustained. In other words, US oil giants are set to rake in an additional +$100 BILLION in free cash flow per year if oil prices remain elevated. We are arguably witnessing the most profitable market conditions in history for US big oil.

One of the curiosities of the internet is the number of people who believe they understand obesity better than the physicians and scientists who study it. For them it’s a moral issue. They fat-shame. They talk about discipline. They assume laziness. The reality is far less theatrical. The food environment changed — abundant calories, engineered foods, constant availability — and that environment exposed differences in human appetite biology. Like many people, I take a GLP-1. I’m a surgeon. I’ve spent decades in operating rooms. I cook most of my meals, rarely drank sugar-sweetened beverages, and I’ve never lived on fast food. I also operated on obesity for years. I never blamed my patients. I blamed myself when outcomes weren’t perfect. Then I experienced something many patients describe: food noise is real. GLP-1 therapies address the physiology of hunger and satiety. That’s why they work. If discipline alone solved obesity, decades of lectures and reality shows with trainers yelling at people would have cured it by now.
