Ethiopia is home to world-class manufacturing. If it had its own seaport today, the impact would be real and measurable. It would essentially remove the country’s major structural constraints and increase its overall performance ceiling. Currently, Ethiopia relies heavily on Djibouti for over 90% of its trade. This dependency creates costs, delays, and vulnerabilities. A domestic seaport would change this in several key ways: 1. Trade efficiency would be greatly improved Transportation costs could be reduced by 20-40%, and shipping times would be shorter and more predictable. 2. Industrial performance would be stronger Factories (such as textiles, agro-processing, and solar manufacturing) would rely on imported inputs and export markets. 3. Foreign investment would increase rapidly Investors would look first at logistics 4. Economic growth will be slightly higher - but more stable. 5. Strategic independence will improve Reducing dependence on neighbors will give Ethiopia more control over its trade policy, pricing. With a population of 130 million, this is why we call the port a matter of concern, and we call it legitimate, appropriate and legal !! The countries of the world must understand this reality!!
