Explicit teaching of basic skills does not have to mean rote, boring whole-class instruction. Thoughtful teachers can use their knowledge of the science of reading to design motivating literacy instruction. kappanonline.org/motivation-sci…

This paper talks about how problem solving is an important GOAL of education, but it's not a good METHOD for teaching novices. Showing novice students how to solve similar problems helps to keep the cognitive load of subsequent problem solving in check. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

@GholdyM This would be phenomenal! My main concern is about flexibility of implementation. As we move to basals and scripted curriculum and have less flexibility/agency with content, teachers need to be able to adapt practices (not just materials) to pursue joy. 💜

Proud of this collaboration w/ @cheryl_phd. Each chapter focuses on a program, concept, or initiative through which white liberalism may operate to create an illusion of antiracism while reproducing racism: SEL, restorative, arts ed, trauma-informed, Montessori, PBIS, more.
Teachers College Press@TCPress

The Other Elephant in the (Class)room, ed. @EquityLiteracy @cheryl_phd, demonstrates how to adopt more authentically justice-oriented approaches to antiracism by exposing the racism upheld by schools and districts that claim an antiracist commitment. bit.ly/3ur3ALs

An ELA team I’m working with is going to have kids put their descriptions of characters and settings into @canva’s Magic Media image generator, and if the images don’t turn out like they hoped, they’re going to add more detail to their story. I’m excited to see how it goes.
