The window is closing.
Jimmy Lai is 78. His health is failing. His sentence is 20 years. His daughter Claire is asking Beijing for mercy before it becomes a eulogy.
On May 14, @POTUS meets with Xi Jinping. This is the moment to act.

Blessed Victor Emilio Moscoso Cárdenas was an Ecuadorian Jesuit priest and educator who gave his life as a martyr for the faith at the end of the nineteenth century. Born on April 21, 1846, in Cuenca, Ecuador, into a large and devout Catholic family, he was baptized Salvador Victor Emilio. Though he initially studied law, he soon felt a stronger calling to religious life. In 1864 he entered the Jesuit novitiate in his native city, made his first vows two years later, and was ordained a priest in 1876. He spent much of his ministry teaching rhetoric, grammar, and philosophy, serving as a dedicated educator who combined intellectual rigor with deep spiritual formation.
By 1892 Father Moscoso was teaching at the Colegio Particular Emaus, also known as San Felipe Neri College, in Riobamba, and from 1893 he served as its rector. Ecuador at the time was convulsed by the Liberal Revolution that began in 1895. The revolutionary government imposed anticlerical measures that restricted the Church and targeted religious orders. Despite the growing dangers, Moscoso and his fellow Jesuits chose to remain in Riobamba to continue serving the local youth and defending the faith through education and pastoral care.
Early on the morning of May 4, 1897, government soldiers attacked the Jesuit residence. They broke into the chapel, desecrated the Eucharist by throwing consecrated hosts to the ground and mocking the sacraments. Finding Father Moscoso kneeling in prayer before a crucifix with rosary in hand, they shot him at point-blank range. He died at the age of fifty-one. Witnesses later recalled his final witness as one of quiet courage and fidelity. His death was recognized as martyrdom in hatred of the faith.
Decades later, the Church examined his cause. Pope Francis approved his beatification in 2019 after confirming that he had been killed out of religious hatred. The ceremony took place on November 16, 2019, in Riobamba, making him Ecuador’s first Jesuit blessed and a powerful example of priestly dedication amid persecution. Today he is remembered as a model of Eucharistic devotion, humble service, and steadfastness in the face of violence. His feast day is observed on May 4.

I don’t understand. There is a genuine immigration fraud case to be made against this woman. And possibly a tax fraud case. Is it ever coming? @USDOJ

They took more than his freedom.
They took moments like this one. The kind you can't schedule or recreate. The kind that only happen when a family is together.
Jimmy Lai has been in solitary confinement since 2020. His family is still waiting for him to come home.

Can someone recognize God without ever having heard His name?
Father Federico Highton recounts the remarkable testimony of an 80-year-old woman who, upon seeing a cross for the first time, asked to hear the story of this unknown God.
The priest, founder of the Order of Saint Elijah, has dedicated his life to bringing the Gospel to remote places where the name of Jesus has not yet been proclaimed. From the mountains of Bhutan to rescuing enslaved people in Pakistan, he has traveled the world as a missionary, spreading the Word of God.
In an interview with the Pontifical Mission Societies, he explained what first encounters with communities that have never heard of Christ are usually like. He also shared a powerful experience from Bhutan—a nation between China and India—that vividly reflects the action of the Holy Spirit.
During their mission, Father Highton and a French volunteer traveled through villages dressed in traditional local clothing. They carried a large cross, brought from Spain, and went from house to house proclaiming the message of Jesus.
On one of those visits, they entered the home of an elderly woman, about 80 years old. Because they did not speak the same language, a guide served as their translator.
“We entered with the large cross of Christ crucified, and the woman suddenly said, ‘Tell me the story of that God.’”
Encouraged by her openness, they began to share the Catholic faith with her.
What makes this moment so striking is that the woman had never heard the name of Jesus, nor was she familiar with Christianity. Yet upon seeing the image of a man on the cross, she somehow recognized Him as God. How is this possible?
For Father Highton, the answer is clear: it is the Holy Spirit who acts first in the soul, preparing the heart even before any explicit proclamation of the Gospel.
“Beginnings are often extraordinary, because the Holy Spirit is the true protagonist of the mission; we are merely supporting actors,” he said.
