In Bogotá, together with Director @WiesnerCarolina, I designated @INCancerologia as a #RaysOfHope Anchor Centre. This leading reference centre will help expand access to quality cancer care across the region so that more patients can be diagnosed earlier, treated on time, and given a better chance to survive. The @IAEAorg is supporting 🇨🇴 with equipment, training and expertise to strengthen cancer care where needed most.

Three countries - Croatia, Guatemala and the Philippines - have recently transferred disused radium sources to be recycled for use in cancer treatment through the IAEA. This legacy material will be transformed into actinium-225, a rare radioisotope used to treat cancer.

Moldova 🇲🇩 advances its efforts to address childhood and other cancers an IAEA review has found. The review also set out recommendations to strengthen services for vulnerable populations as the country prepares its National Cancer Control Programme 2026–2030, Experts from the IAEA, @WHO and @IARCWHO evaluated Moldova’s cancer control capacities across the full spectrum of care – from prevention and early detection to treatment and palliative care. As part of a new global partnership between the IAEA and @StJude Children’s Research Hospital to strengthen paediatric radiation oncology, childhood cancer services were also assessed. Ahead of #WorldCancerDay, the IAEA highlighted its efforts in expanding the diagnosis and treatment of non-communicable diseases, including cancer, in a statement to the @WHO Executive Board #EB158 today. In 2025, the IAEA, WHO and @IARCWHO carried our comprehensive cancer control assessments in 8 countries, while the number of #RaysOfHope Anchor Centres – assigned to assist their neighbouring countries in establishing or expanding their capacities in radiotherapy and multimodality medical imaging – rose to 18. An IAEA-led team of experts identified several opportunities to strengthen specialized oncology training and enhance coordination in the health sector in Panama. Experts from the IAEA, @WHO and @IARCWHO highlighted Panama’s strengths in cancer care, such as a modern diagnostic and treatment infrastructure, a committed health workforce, and a legal framework to address the disease. At the same time, the mission identified several opportunities for growth, including for improved coordination between primary care, diagnostic services, and specialized oncology — as well as expanded training in oncology specialties and strengthened data systems. The IAEA has designated @prinsesmaximac as a Collaborating Centre to expand access to childhood cancer care worldwide. Today in Utrecht 🇳🇱, with the presence of Her Majesty Queen Máxima @koninklijkhuis, IAEA Director General @rafaelmgrossi signed a new partnership agreement to strengthen practical knowledge on radiotherapy for treating children with cancer. Tanzania 🇹🇿 has taken important steps to decentralize its cancer services, according to a review by the IAEA, the @WHO and @IARCWHO. A new centre has brought radiotherapy to the Kilimanjaro region and plans for expanding this critical treatment to other parts of the country are underway. These #CancerCare4All efforts are supported by the IAEA's #RaysOfHope initiative. “Tanzania has made strides in cancer control, including strengthening infrastructure, expanding human resource capacity and refining our policy framework in response to the rising cancer burden,” said @wizara_afyatz Permanent Secretary Seif Shekalaghe.
