@glenweyl @curtis_yarvin Ah, I mean that the proper conclusion of Curtis' complaints about democracy should not be 'we need a CEO dictator.' but rather, 'we need to improve procurement.' You could ironically use his arguments about the firm to argue in favor of communism.

There is only negative evidence that autism rates have increased over time. The reality is that autism diagnoses have gone up while the population is as autistic as ever.

@ole_b_peters Hello. This is really cool! But, doesn't EUT cover this if you explicitly model out dynamics? e.g. you can derive the kelly betting formula by maximizing expected log wealth, so most Macro models with value functions should be fine, no?

1/ How can I put this? "Expected utility maximizers don't maximize utility." Why? Because utility is not usually an ergodic quantity in the mathematical models used by economists, and maximizing its expected value doesn't mean much in the real world.

One of my favorite papers in recent years included this diagram. It shows the impact of controlling for three different types of variables: confounders, colliders, and mediators. With confounders, control is good. With the others, you ruin your result by controlling.

The true number for teens currently 20 years old, if I were to guess, is probably closer to ~7%. But that's still a shockingly large number.

A slower-moving average is given by the CDC's survey, which has 27% of women surveyed having a birth before age 20. So, yes--still very surprised.

I recently googled the % of teenage girls that get pregnant (after watching the movie, Juno, which was great, btw). A number of my male colleagues were utterly shocked.

@harijayashankar I think it'd be nice if more top programs admitted more students, allowed them longer time periods to finish their traditional first-year reqs, and kept quals/prelims. That's how Nancy Birdsall completed her PhD.
