I worked for a $4 hourly rate as a Web Developer. Now, my freelancing brings me 5-figures per month. Here are some of the lessons I learned along the way

I might say that Claude is doing some nice designs. Great when you're a dev that needs something to work with. This is much better than what I currently have on fridgechef.org

@levelsio City or highway driving is mostly boring for me. Highway is a bit better, depending where you are, as it might have nice scenery but you need to be aware of other cars as some are driven by idiots. Coast or mountains can be a nice, relaxing drive.

When you scope correctly, some development gigs can take 1-2 hours. The process of scoping it, will probably take you longer on such jobs than actual dev time. And from personal experience: AI can waste your time when scoping.

Tried Stitch, and although it's amazing, we have this already here. I tried prompts on there and in Claude web version, and Claude creates really good landing pages as a starting point. Much better than Stitch, for now.

@levelsio Not just Philips, I am afraid. A lot of such in hardware products. Also true in the car industry.

None of Philips electronics products are owned or made by Philips Only their medical devices still are They sold literally everything (even their lights division) Now they license the Philips logo to whoever wants it Yes you too can make anything and pay them some money to stick the Philips logo on top of it It all means nothing!

@levelsio Got so much respect for Phillips as a brand for some reason Since their CRT monitors that slapped. What a beauty. Myb PSV too. But now I buy their toothbrushes. Kinda like Braun and Dieter Rams. They fumbled it somehow.

@no_fear_inc That's pretty normal, and I think we all do that when reviewing where we spend money and ROI of it. The differentiator will be having a human to reply :D

Even the second Intercom plan starts at $99/mo + a dollar per resolution, so it's already in the low 4 fig a year. I also went through 6 stages of cleanup in the past 3 years and got rid of over 50 recurring licenses that no longer made sense - tutorial sites, plugin licenses not actively used, Kadence or Genesis or whatever annual renewals, Optin Monster, Buffer, Postwise, and others that were not as actively used, or were too easy to replace. So the 2-figures get to 5 figures a year eventually.

Built something my wife asked me few months ago. Snap a pic of your ingredients and get recipes. She wanted something to give her what to cook when she's out of ideas :D It's maybe 20-30% done of what I plan with it, but it's working (kinda) :D fridgechef.org

Now that I think of it I pretty much act now without drinking how I acted when I was 18 years old but with 4 drinks Because now I eat clean and workout
Hans Amato@HansAmato

Alcohol doesn't "lower your inhibitions." It temporarily restores your GABA That's why the version of you that comes out after 3 drinks feels like the real you. Because it IS the real you. Your sober personality is the cage When your gut is destroyed and inflammation is chronic, GABA production tanks. GABA is the neurotransmitter that calms excitatory signaling. Without enough of it, your nervous system runs hot all the time. Everything feels like a threat. Social situations feel unsafe. Eye contact feels like confrontation. You overthink every word before you say it Then you drink. Alcohol binds to GABA receptors. Inhibitory tone floods back. Suddenly you're funny. Relaxed. Confident. Social. The person you always knew you were but couldn't access sober I was this guy for years. Couldn't talk to women without a drink. Couldn't relax at a party without 2 beers first. Sweating during basic social interactions. Built my entire social life around alcohol because it was the only way to feel normal What actually fixed it (not willpower, not "just stop drinking"): > Ate enough food. Red meat, potatoes, salt. Stopped chronic fasting which was keeping my body in survival mode and crushing GABA production > Fixed my gut. When the gut is inflamed, precursors to GABA don't get produced properly. Fix the gut, GABA comes back online > High dose agmatine. This was the single biggest shift in anxiety reduction I've experienced > Aspirin. Improved my temperature regulation (cold hands = low metabolic rate = low stress tolerance = anxious baseline) > Removed the triggers: chronic undereating, intermittent fasting, keto Sober me became the person drunk me used to be. Same confidence. Same humor. Same ease. No hangover If the only version of yourself you like requires alcohol to access, that person is real. The wall in front of him is biological. And it's fixable without a single drink I've written detailed guides on gut repair, GABA restoration, and everything I used to fix this on my substack. link in bio

@tunguz Look outside the window: 1. boats are still there = "nevera" is nowhere near 2. boats are hitting each other = "nevera" is closer 3. some boats are under water = "nevera" is here, fuck.

Few days ago, on a server where I have hobby stuff, wanted to see if I could use AI to update the server OS, mysql and such. Just following commands given by AI. Hour later: mysql completely wiped out. No more dbs anywhere :P Will have to take a day to restore all :D

@ijerkov It was just wool between, but wool was touching the roof, and thus the warm-cold "join" was created where the condensation happened. Will probably use a "termo" paint on the roof and then put an isolation rubber around that part where the condensation is.

Finally took the time to start investigating "leaking" on the upper floor. Current verdict: condensation. Will probably need to install some better insulation between roof and ceiling. Fixing in public 😅

@csaba_kissi Experienced similar. That actually gives me optimism in our work since we have the knowledge for such. For some non-devs, might be much harder to spot stuff like that. And in the long run, it might become a big issue on some projects.

@igorbenic I now do all my side projects fully with AI. In many cases, vibe coded. But it has to be refactored in many cases, as I mentioned. But even that is vibe refactored

Years ago, coding was the hard part, and ideation was the easier part. Now it's the opposite. Everybody is coding with AI now, and it's harder to come up with new ideas than ever.

@csaba_kissi I'll check it out. Have a few options to look at and see what could be the best way to solve it.

@igorbenic Thankfully, I installed recuperation. There are small recuperation units available. Maybe it's an option for you.
