It works in conjunction with thinking mode, which has web search. My pattern is: 1. Think on topic A, B, C. It searches and generates "primers" for me. 2. Then switch over to Pro Thinking and ask it to munge it all together and answer a really hard problem. After flipping this:

@MaziyarPanahi @emollick Sorry, yeah, it's not a different model; it's on MAX reasoning for sure. It'll just cook for 30 minutes sometimes. And the depth of thought is obvious. I'm just not smart enough to need it more than two or three times a week.

GPT-5.4 Pro continues to be the only model of its class. For anything really hard & complex, I throw it into the maw with every bit of context I can think of. More often than not, something very useful comes out. I can't get the same results from Codex or Code or anything else.

@MaziyarPanahi @emollick gpt-5.4 xhigh is the best do stuff model. GPT-5.4 pro is the smartest model. Opus 4.6 is the best talk through it with you model.

I think the funniest recent interaction was standing in line for coffee in SF and someone stops and goes "WAIT. WAIT HERE." (no other context yet). I'm in line so I'm not going anywhere. He runs back with his open laptop to show me Ghostty riced the fuck out. It was beautiful.

People of pi. I'm going to break the extension API hard. Specifically, business logic (event handlers, custom tools/compaction/etc.) needs to be split off from the ui layer. it will likely not be a massive amount of work to migrate an existing extension, but it will hurt a little.

@MaziyarPanahi I'm probably older than you. My childhood editor was Commodore 64 default editor and then I upgraded to Turbo Pascal in the early 90s lol. Both of those were in the terminal. So I'm back baby.

i cancelled cursor 3 months ago and went back to vscode. last week i closed all 12 vscode windows. realized i hadn't touched any of them. 20 years of IDEs. NetBeans. Visual Studio. IntelliJ. VSCode. Cursor. all replaced by a terminal. who else killed their IDE this year?

@daniel_mac8 @NoPriorsPod Glad we both agree we are smarter than Andrej lol. But I also ran remote teams 12 hours away with lower skills than gpt 3.5 turbo and I got code done using upwork devs a couple times to try it out. All easy mode compared to those really awful approaches.

karpathy on Dwarkesh in Oct. '25: > AI agents don't work > They are not intelligent enough > They are not multi-modal enough > They can't do computer use karpathy on @NoPriorsPod in March '26: > AI agents fail but it's a skill issue for the humans > You didn't give them the right instructions AI agents absolutely hit an inflection point in December of 2025 and there's no looking back.
Haider.@slow_developer

Andrej Karpathy says when AI agents fail, it's usually a skill issue, not a capability issue You didn't write good enough instructions, didn't set up the right memory tool, or didn't parallelize correctly "the real shift is working in macro actions" One does research, one writes code, one plans, all running 20-minute tasks simultaneously

@cosmo25x @TheAhmadOsman That's really the only thing that engineers can do at this point: get their clankers to shave milliseconds and microseconds off their code
